    Actually, Dextre is a lot more like R2-D2. Dextre could be considered the first real astromech. He's a robot, he's in space, and he fixes and builds things.

    And, with the recent passing of science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, one famous machine named HAL particularly comes to mind, especially when you factor in that Dextre is what’s called a “telemanipulator.”
    ?? If it's a telemanipulator, then HAL isn't a good comparison at all. It's more like a high-tech version of those long-reach "grabbers" that you use to reach high shelves...
