Thread: Welcome to the new server

    Welcome to the new server

If you can read this, we're now on the new server. Sorry for the delay, but importing the database took much longer than I was planning. I didn't realize it would take 8 hours to feed in a 1.7 GB database file.

This new machine is much faster and has twice the RAM as the old server, so it should carry us for a few years.

As always, please let me know if you detect any bugs.

    Thanks for your patience!

A post I made last night (well before any service interruption) is missing - I'm wondering if anyone else is missing posts?

Maybe. It might have been just after the 2100 PST deadline. It was close.

In looking around, I've seen one article stamped just two minutes before the deadline, so some made it.

Some banning action, after the deadline, appears to have been lost too. Mods may wish to doublecheck their efforts in that area.

comedy gold there. Server seems so far to be fine for me, it may be just placebo effect but it certainly feels faster to me.

I noticed that the pages loaded much faster now than they used to, and everything seems to be working.

I put an announcement that sat at the top of every page warning people that posts made wouldn't make it over to the new server.

So it's not missed, the folks in Astrophotography are noticing New server won't attach images.

I just tried an attachment and it failed upon upload, in the attachment-process window: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

I should have made a note here when I contacted Fraser by PM about the problem.
I think troubleshooting has moved to vBulletin support, though the attachments not shown was something I forgot to mention to when I reported uploads not working.

This images problem seems to be common out there. One suggestion was to reinstall the latest version of the forum, which I just did, but that didn't seem to fix it.

I'm going to keep searching for the solution.

Okay, I figured it out. The attachments directory was hard-coded in the file settings. I changed that to the new server location and everything works fine. Hmm... too much information?

    Anyway, it works. :-)

Hey, my quick reply text window is about hte size of a postage stamp, or abour 1/10th the screen width (but the same height). Is this a new server problem?

    One upgrader makes quickreplyboxes larger
And one upgrade makes them small

It's not a problem for me.

What happens to the old server? Was there a final farewell ceremony?

    Thanks Fraser.

For he's a jolly good administrator,
For he's a jolly good administrator,
For he's a jolly good administrator,
    Which nobody can deny,
But we'll still get a two thousand post thread debating the proposition anyway.

Donated to mythbusters, what they do with it nobody knows but it won't last long.

The only problem I had was that there was really bad rain storm and the cable went out at the same time as the forum went down.
