Phil Plait is an intelligent person and as such, I'm willing to bet that he doesn't want the job!

That's what makes him an ideal candidate! The ones who want the job are the ones who can't be trusted with it.

I remember talking to one of my former colleagues about our national team, the cricket captaincy, I suggested the other player who was experienced, an all rounder, intelligent and basically well liked.
His answer was that you don't want to overload your best player with (I can't say it here) a "management" job, he will lose focus, the politics and all will destruct him from the game.
I kind of feel the same about the BA.

you're right Sticks. This is the only way that we can find out who runs this planet; the guy in charge. But he will have to be brain washed into forgetting why he wants the job, and just become a real cool frood. perhaps he could call himself The Fizz.

True, but in that example, being a player is the best use of his skills.

We need a disposeable public figurehead, and an actual behind the scenes mover.
