Any pictures of a lunar eclipse FROM the moon?

    Hi Guys,

Are there any probes or anything on the moon that has been able to take a picture of a lunar eclipse from the moon? I've been looking for one and haven't been able to find one. I did find this Wikipedia article, List of artificial objects on the Moon, which contains the statement "The only artificial objects on the Moon that are still in use are the retroreflectors for the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment left there by Apollo astronauts."

And there apparently was a Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package program, but it was turned off in 1977 and doesn't appear to have contained a camera anyway.

So does such a picture exist? I'm sure there's some artwork out there with someone's idea of what it must look like, but I want the real thing, if at all possible.

One of the Surveyors took a picture of a lunar eclipse from the Moon in 1967 (posted in the linked Space.com thread); though it's poor by modern standards, it's the only one I know about. Repeating this observation with the latest probes should be a high PR priority, IMO, but if it hasn't been done by one of the currently-orbiting probes it probably won't be for a while; the next total lunar eclipse isn't until 2010.

Interesting question and welcome to the BAUT Forum.

See View of Earth during lunar eclipse and How will look a total solareclipse on the Moon? for previous answers.

Japan's Kaguya gave us some nice Earth-rise pictures and movies a few months ago. Maybe they caught some of the eclipse action this time.

Edit: In previous topics, links to the Surveyor 3 images of the Earth's eclipse of the Sun seemed to have wandered off in cyberspace. I think it was this material:
ALPO-Astronomy: Observe Eclipses! Excerpts from book by Dr. Michael D. Reynolds and Richard A. Sweetsir
(from ALPO-Astronomy: Excerpts from Observe Eclipses!)

Perhaps this will be more permanent: NASA: SP-168 Exploring Space with a Camera :: p. 128, Surveyor III video image of eclipse

"The color-reconstituted photograph at top right," said J. J. RENNILSON, of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, "is the first one in which man has been able to observe an eclipse of the Sun by his own planet. Surveyor III took the view from the Moon with the wide-angle mode of its TV camera.
