    Quantum of Solace

With the title of the next Bond film having been inexplicably declared to be Quantum of Solace (a title that should have "Harry Potter and the" at the start of it), does anyone know what a quantum of solace is? A soliton, perhaps? Where does it fit in the standard model? So many questions.

The definition of the word quantum is not necessarily only for Quantum Mechanics.

    So it can work.

Yes, but is solace quantumized (is that the word?)? Not all things are. Maybe solace is a continous function? Are there only certain allowed states of grief, and you can't have 73% of the grief of someone else? Is there a minimal solace state? What about the solace of not knowing if Schrodinger's cat is alive or dead?

The trouble is that you cannot determine a persons state of solace and their velocity at the same time.

I think the theory says veracity in this case

Credit where credit is due (Spoiler Alert)

    Personally, I think it's clever.

    ***SPOILER ALERT***

The story is about Bond getting revenge on the organization behind Le Chiffre and Mr. White (SMERSH maybe?) after what happened in Casino Royal. The title seems to suggest this vengence supplies the smallest concievable amount of comfort possible- but maybe that's enough.

    Nah. It's all mine.

I'm leaning towards thinking that a quantum of solace is a lepton.

I was thinking it is a tear. And I guess tears are quantized - how do you have fractional tears?

I take it the movie "Quantum of Solace" is not based on the short story (starring James Bond) of the same name by Ian Fleming. It was part of the collection called "For Your Eyes Only" (some of whose stories inspired the movie). There was no Bond action in the short story--it was Bond having drinks with someone who told him a story about a man who divorced his wife and took revenge against her because he didn't get the "quantum of solace" from her.

tdvance and doodler (first) beat me to it. It's named after a short story; part of the FYEO collection. Though, from what I know about the short, either the title is the only thing the movie will have in common, or it will be a very not-Bondlike Bond film. Who knows.

ah I missed Doodler's post--I must have subconsciously skipped over the link.

According to IMDB, there's already a Bond Girl cast and getting in Bond Girl shape. So I suggest they're pretty much just using the title.

The same was done with Octopussy. It too is a short story where Bond only figures in the background. The Living Daylights, the opening sequence of the movie covered the short story, it's title came from. Casino Royale was a great start to rebuilding the series, I just hope they continue with it's success.

    NECRO THREAD

Saw this last night, and for anyone thinking of seeing it, there are a couple of things I'd like a second opinion about. One is even astronomy.

    No Spoilers here.

At some point just after arriving in Bolivia, there is establishing shot of a Full Moon. But it looks odd. It almost looks like a penumbral eclipse, with the lit half to the right of the frame. There is no color difference, and the brightness between the two sections isn't really anywhere near what it should be for an eclipse, but it definitely dosn't look like earthshine either.

The second item is not a family friendly one. Near the end of the move, an unnamed female characer seems to pull a "Basic Instinct" It's framed in such a way that it really seems like it must have been intentional, but it might be a case where I didn't really see what I thought I saw. But the GF saw it too.

Oh, and the title has nothing to do with the plot at all. Overall, a decent film. Follows up Royale pretty weel, but also has a lot of nods to the classics from the 60's.

Every time my brother sees ads for this movie, he mispronounces "Solace" as "So-lace".

I have issues with the new Bond.

Daniel Craig is good enough, but the writing... James Bond is not a character made to be emotional. Or even Emo.
There are enough soft, anti-hero types out there already. Bond's strength has always been not to be one of them.

Seeing as Bond becomes such a womanizer after Vesper, perhaps a quantum of solace is a one-night stand with a good-looking chick.

For female fans hoping for a glimpse of Craig's drool-worthy body, a quantum of solace would be the 8 seconds in the film where he is shirtless in between all the shots of things blowing up.

I have a different take on it, and this sort of goes against two of the above posts.

In Royale, he said that Vesper wasn't his type because she was single. To me, that implied that he didn't want the risk of a relationship actually forming. When he fell for Vesper, it changed his outlook on things. When it appeared she betrayed him, it made him cold. There are a few scenes in Solace that show he's got a soft side, but it's not really "fluffy-soft" as much as "just soft enough".* If he stays distant, he can't be hurt.

From things I've read, Solace was part 2 of a three film "origin story" that will establish his traits and catch phases that are used in nearly every other movie.

According to IMDB, Craig suffered 4 stitches on his face, the slicing off of the tip of one finger, and a shoulder injury that required 6 screws to repair. That could be a reason for the lack of skin time on his part.

*For those who have seen it, the secene in Bolivia just after the traffic stop is an example. Another is the look of real regret he gets when the Bolivian woman explains her story.

It's the smallest indivisible amount of solace. In other words, practically none.

For the original, and best Bond, something along the lines of "Charmed" would be more appropriate.

With a title like Quantum of Solace I half expected the customary blurb in the end credits to read: James Bond Will Return in a Modicum of Alleviation.

But what's the POINT of a Bond movie without a sex scene, but with lots of Bond feeling sorry for himself? That's just not Bond.

I also have issues with the poster. It looks like one of the lower-budget H&M ads. In fact, this is what I thought it was when I first saw it. Where's the glamour? Did they take the glamour out of Bond? What would be left then?

These made me think of villain lines:

"Now do you understand, Mr. Bond? With this, the world will cease to exist, but it will take a really, really long time."

    The LHC is Not Enough
"Ah, Mr. Bond, I plan to make black holes, but you see, I need something far more powerful! The LHC is not enough!

Couldn't think of anything for the other two.
