The playoff race in the NFL, 2007

Anybody here cheering on a contender?

I gotta tell you, I was hoping the Texans would be in a better position. They beat Denver this week to keep them in the hunt. All they need now is for several teams to lose a lot of games and they are in.

It was exciting to have the Cardinals in the running so late in the season. That very rarely happens. They've been in Arizona for about 20 years and have had one 9 and 7 season, one 8 and 8 season, the rest losing records.

I'd like to see an undefeated Patriots team and some 9 and 7 wild card team in the Superbowl and have the wild card team win in the closing seconds on a bad call. That would be real entertainment. Controversy is fun.

I was looking at the standings a little while ago. I think the Dolphins maybe almost mathematically eliminated.

How long ago was that? October?

How about that Lake Erie team?
Go from absolute underDOGS to a possibility of taking the division.

Now; if we can just schedule up some more blizzards.

Oh, like a lack of snow is usually our problem.

The Cleveland game made the highlight reels because of all the snow. And, maybe it led to an interesting flub by the network.

At one point, with the Browns up 3-0, their opponent was about to punt. The snap got past the punter, who chased the ball into the end zone and kicked it out the back of the zone (rather than let Cleveland fall on it for a TD).

    Safety, 2 points.

Which the TV scoreboard gave to the opponents.

Hah...I was too busy trying to find the players on the screen to notice that.

And a 49 yarder in a blizzard? Wow... Around here, the stantion is now starting to be called the "Dawson".

LoL yeah I saw that. Ignoring the broadcasting flub, I have to say that was pretty heads-up play. Natural reaction is usually to pick the ball up and try to either salvage the punt, or run with it. He realized where he was on the field, and that in those conditions picking up the ball would really be a bad idea.

Yeah, that was an amazing kick.

Overall it was a great game, unless you were a Bills fan. Now two very winnable but far from sure-thing games against Cinci and SanFran. An 11-win season would be a miracle. And the idea that it's December and Cleveland's still in the hunt for division winner? Even a life-long fan like me would have never guessed that after that first game against Pitt.

Oh, and 'grats to the Dolphins for not going un-feated this year. I saw the game in OT, Balt had the ball on Miami's 25 or 20, and thought "not today, Miami". By the time I had finished getting dressed and hopped in my car, the radio was talking about Miami's first win. I don't know what happened, but just underlines the fact that Baltimore is awful this year. Which makes us Clevelanders very, very happy.

Smart move by the punter. Yeah, caught that. BTW, IIRC, the last 8-0 NFL game was back in the 1940s.

Another smart move was by Brian Westbrook of the Eagles. Instead of going in for a score late in the game, and then giving the ball back to the Plowboys for some Romo/TO heroics, he chose not to score but instead to go down at the 1 in order to run out the clock. That's thinking on one's feet. Being a Giants fan I dislike the Eagles but that is nothing compared to the hatred for the hated Cowboys. Awww, even Jerry's Kids (the officials in Arlington) and Jones himself coaching the coaches on the sidelines couldn't pull that one out. Awww...

That foul smell coming from Joisey isn't industrial pollution this time, it's the stench the Jints made in the Meadowlands. I kept yelling at Brandon Jacobs "Catch the blasted ball THEN run!" but no...and they kept passing to him and he kept dropping the ball, just like the rest of the receiving corps, except Shockey, who of course then got injured by his own man (Toomer) and is lost for the season.

The wind made for some funny stuff though, like a ball "rolling" for about 25+ yards due to being pushed by the breeze. Maybe it also removed the bad smell shortly after the game ended.

Congrats to Cleveland for their win in Snow Bowl #, uh, lost count.

The buzz in Baltimore today is one sentence: "Break up the Dolphins!"

Westbrook's move showed some smarts, all right.

Had he scored, Philadelphia would have been up by 11... but the 'Boys would have gotten the ball with more than two minutes left. Quick TD, onside kick recovery, quick TD and the Eagles lose.

Stop short of the goal line, run out the clock, Eagles win.

In related news, the Packers won (and Favre broke another record), which means if the 'Boys lose another one, they can look forward to a rematch with the Pack in Green Bay.

I don't think that much of Eli, but he got let down by his receivers big time on the day. I can't believe how many passes bounced right out of the hands of Giants receivers.

Unfortunately, I don't think too many people do think much of him. The reason I think that's unfortunate is because as a person, I like him 10x more than that other brother we all know. It had to be hard coming into the league with so many expecting you to fill those shoes, but I was hoping he'd at least establish himself. From the looks of it, he probably won't be around too long, at least not as a starting QB.

I'm kinda glad to see Farve doin so well up there. When the Browns left, I became a temporary GB fan. I don't watch them, or really care about them all that much. But it'd be nice to see someone as talented as Farve go out on top; for the past few years it was getting kinda sad watching him struggle (though mostly through the fault of not having a team around him). Am I the only one who thinks that with his gray-ing hair, he almost looks like a younger Harison Ford?

The players were put on charter buses back to Buffalo.
Which they probably should have done in the first place...It's only a 3-4 hour drive.

You know, forget 2012, the world may come to an end by December 31, 2007. The Indians, the Cavs, and the Browns all in the playoffs in a single calender year....

I don't know about that. Seems there are several teams, like Da Bears, that would be glad to have him on their team. Even Testaverde started a few games this year so Eli could hang on for years.

Since I brought up the Bears and they are mathematically still in the playoff hunt so this is still slightly on topic , I just gotta say I'm kind of afraid Kyle Orton will play decent the rest of the season, thereby causing the organization to decide he is the QB for the future with Wrecks, er Rex, as backup and end up playing QB by committee again next year . Of course, he could surprise everyone and be the next come from nowhere star, but really, what are the odds of that happening in Chicago?

Well, the wrong two teams won on Sunday. The Texans are playing for pride now. Would be nice if they finished the season with at least as many wins as they have losses.

NEXT year could be very interesting!

Well, my best friend's family is from Wissconsin, so they were fans, which is why I started liking them during Cleveland's absence. But when the browns came back, I lost interest in the Pack (bonus points for rhyme?).

Yeah, the Texans came very close; there were a couple of games they should have won, but inconsistency ruined them. It will be interesting to see how they finish, especially since we may have a for-real "quarterback controversy" the way Sage has played during Matt's absence.

(Well, okay, we had one with David Carr, but it was of the negative variety.)

As for Green Bay, I fell in love with the Pack during the Lombardi Era... great teams, great individuals. I'm glad they're doing so well this year.

I don't really follow the Texans (don't get much press up here in Ohia'land). But I like to see the young teams do well. Sounds like they're at the point that Cleveland seems to be perpetually at (and I, like everyone else expected them to be at this year) where the hint of promise is there, but discipline and consistency issues cost them very winnable games. It's extremely frustrating, I know.

My Seahawks clinched a spot 2 Sundays ago, so I guess they took a week 'off' last Sunday.
