What is a week? Why are there 7 days in a week and why are we using those names?
A week might be approximately a quarter of a lunar month,
but it could be entirely arbitrary, based on nothing at all. Basically
it is seven days long because that was convenient for the people
who established it, perhaps 4000 years ago or more, and because
it continues to be useful to people now.
You can find answers to most questions about calendars in The
Calendar FAQ: http://www.tondering.dk/claus/calendar.html
including the origins of the names of the days of the week in
various languages.
