BBP, dude, relax. There was a major overhaul of the Constitution class design when they recreated the space scenes from "Trouble with Tribbles" for "Trials and Tribble-ations".

Besides, the old bird was kinda bland, anyway because the models of the time were so simplistic. She could use a little sprucing up.

I think the re-designed Constitution Class from ST: TMP IS the design that they should go with....modern/complex enough and eye pleasing as well...

Well, since John Eaves is working on Trek XI, you can be assured that the new Enterprise will look really kewl and be completely encrusted with pointless greeblies and doo-hickies, oh yeah, and maybe a few phaser cannons jutting out from nowhere.

    So what's the problem?

If it's a visually pleasing design, then great. If it's a horrible design, then that's disappointing. But it's not as if they're recalling all the old episodes and pasting the new design into them. You'll still have your memories!

I was a TARDIS fan myself, and I used to love seeing different interpretations of the inside of the Doctor's Ship (and occasionally those of other Time Lords). I think the current one is ghastly, as were the two in the Peter Cushing films, but the one in the Paul McGann movie was gorgeous.

In general, I'm all for reinterpretation. It keeps things fresh and interesting.

Me too, but for the stern ST fan, this could be a problem. Whole worlds of fantasies are built around keeping ST consistant. And without these fans, an ST movie is not going to fly.

It probably won't be a problem if they keep it limited to cosmetic changes and give the illusion of the same airframe (spaceframe?). I personally would like to see a natural progression of updates consistant with a ship being updated through time.

I agree as long as it's still faithful to the original look. If it's anything like the mild changes made for trial and tribble-ations I'll be happy. I'm all for adding details to the paintjob as long as they don't go completely modern with it. I think it would be kinda cool to have a true TOS movie with the look and feel of the original show, just touched up a little. No big budget required, that way maybe they could focus on writing a compelling story with the original characters rather than big budget SFX.

With a "villain" named Nero, what are the odds of that?

Or even removing some of the paintjob to reveal the raw metal, or unfinished surface, or un-installed component, or missing fairings, or something else.

Yeah, sadly I'm having flashbacks of Shinzon for some reason... I guess it's because Nero was an emporer and so was shinzon (more or less) so it sounds like a repeat. In fact, romulus and remus are from roman mythology and Nero was roman, so it would seem to imply another romulan story with yet another romulan emporer as a villain. If that's true... it shows the writers really have learned nothing about repeating history.
*and to go totally geeky, this would be in direct contradiction to balance of terror where kirk first encounters the romulans - so I'm really hoping my assumption is wrong.*

Yeah, that doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Maybe that way the movie could end with the "original looking" enterprise leaving drydock.

It's supposed to be old trek. How many times have we seen alien romans, alien roman or greek gods, nazis, and other hugely blatant anachronisms. You want old trek, you got old trek.

So perhaps Nero is THE Nero from roman history? That WOULD be old trek indeed lol. And hey, that'd be cool with me lol. It probably wouldn't have much mass appeal, but my parents loved original trek and don't really care for anything but TOS; this kind of thing might just bring their generation back to the theater for one more go.

You know what would be really cool, (I don't think they'll do this but...) we see the Enterprise approaching from a distance and its exactly like the old "1960s" Enterprise, but as she gets closer, we then see more details and as the ship passes, we then see a really amazing Enterprise with lines, systems, hatches, pipes, doodads, and what-have-you details - but not too much of course.

    P.S.
I'd also CGI all the new actors based on computer image models of how the original TV actors looked in their earlier (pre Star Trek) days. (I don't think they'll do that either.)

You already have that with the remastered series on DVD. The boxed set has beauty shots and flybys that do just that.

Will it still have the blinking red lights? Wouldn't want something to run into it by mistake. It's a small universe, after all.

Have you ever tried parking a starship in a crowded space station?

I say there is an invisible elf in my backyard. How do you prove that I am wrong?

No but Kirstie Alley has. Experience with the heavy cruiser.

And that was after the weight loss program downgraded her to...never mind.

And you have something against the USS Kirstie Alley?

Yeah, because we all know that recent Star Trek writers are extremely careful about not violating early continuity. They must research meticulously.

Hey, give her a break! Her starship driving lessons were provided by Tommy Webber. Someone had to protect her.

Maybe that also explains her subsequent weight gain; a subconscious desire for protective cushioning...
