Animal control workers seized dozens of dogs and cats from housing projects in the town of Barceloneta and hurled them from a bridge to their deaths, authorities and witnesses said Friday...the city hired Animal Control Solution to clear three housing projects of pets after warning residents about a no-pet policy...Raids were conducted on Monday and Wednesday, and residents told TV reporters they saw the animal control workers inject the animals. When they asked what they were giving them, they said they were told it was a sedative for the drive to the shelter....But instead of being taken to a shelter, the pets and strays were thrown 50 feet from a bridge in the neighboring town of Vega Baja, according to Fontanez, witnesses and activists, apparently before dawn Tuesday.

What really disturbs me is this part:

Repulsive. Whoever ordered this raid should lose his job at the very least.

Take the guilty parties, inject them with "sedative" and toss them over the bridge as well.

There seems to be a very different attitude to feral animals in Puerto Rico than on the mainland - we were at one of the entrances to El Yunque National Forest, which had numerous (unapproachable) cats wandering around. We asked someone local about it, and they said no one really cared enough to do anything about it.

I think the latter makes more sense.
Media coverage peers into dark corners and makes known what would normally be unnoticed...
These guys obviously didn't care and had lied to both those who contracted them but also to the pet owners.

They callously did this in front of the children to whom the pets belonged.

Then, when they thought no one was looking, they did some "illegal dumping" and pocketed the fee they charged for transporting the animals to the shelter and the euthanasia.
They, of course, intended to get away with it.

I know what I said sounds a little harsh, and I do care about humanity, but animals (non-humans), except for maybe a few exceptions, don't do the horrible things that people do.

In this case, it was a police raid. They didn't really have much choice in the matter.
They were unaware of the actual intentions of the raiders (aka Animal Control) who had lied to them, as well as that the raiders, (formerly known as "Prince") didn't dump the animals until in another town.

it doesnt sound harsh people are more cruel to animals because animals cant say anything back and a dog knows not to bite a human because it thinks it will get punished for doing so, we are the cruellest other animals only kill for food we have that provided for us in the shops , they kill donkeys in spain for fun by pushing them over cliffs yes they are alive when this happens to them and the towns folk cheer when they do this

Hunting is quite natural and respecting your prey includes not wasting your kill and not killing more than necessary.

That article is really disturbing. If they have implemented a No-Pet Policy , then they should made it clear to the community of why it's being implemented so that people will follow even if it's hard to be taken away from their pets, especially to the children.

But the way they took the animals is horrible. That person who is responsible who sent orders for this raid doesn't have a heart with animals .

This particularly depends on how dominant a dog is in a household (its place in the 'pack', as it were), the severity of the ill-treatment, and the degree of socialization of the dog.

My husband and I adopted a retired racing greyhound last year, and one of the first things we were told RE adopting these dogs is to never discipline them by hitting them. These dogs have been around humans, but they have not been socialized as pets. They have lived among other dogs, not with humans. They weren't hit when they were being trained as racers. Therefore, the probability of being bitten after slapping one of these dogs would be very high--and these are very large dogs, so they could do considerable damage. That said, we were also told that discipline must be taught and maintained, lest these dogs assume the 'alpha' role in the household pack and become a menace. Greys are naturally very gentle dogs, so there are many ways to assert dominance without use of violence.

The pets in the OP story were injected with a substance and then tossed from a bridge AFAIK; I don't think they were shot.

But they can't do the wonderful things humanity can, either. Can a cat compose a symphony? Can a dog walk on the Moon? Can a dolphin create a complex society based on centuries of political and ethical theory?

I thought not.

Certainly humanity is capable of terrible things. But, as I've said before, the capacity we have to do those base things is exactly what allows us to do great things. So don't right us off, yet.
