Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Sounds a bit more of a Harry Potter type of title, but still - can't wait to see it!

Anybody else been patiently waiting for years and years for the return of this franchise to the big screen? Young Indiana DVD's being released at long last too.

It sounds very exciting, though. I was in New Haven back in June when they were filming a few scenes and I saw them covering up modern signs on the streets.
I may not be Indy, but I have heard of Crystal Skulls before. They are made of solid crystal, uncannily lifelike and were believed to be Mayan, but microscopic investigation has shown that they are all fakes, made with 19th century techniques. However, in Indy's time this was not known, so I presume they will be Mayan in the movie. Either that, or the plot will be about him proving them fake a few decades early.
Oh, but you want the woo-woo junk: museum custodians in the 60's refused to clean anything in a room containg a Crystal Skull as they said they had seen it's eyes glow and creepy fog in the room and stuff like that. Supposedly, they wouldn't work near it unless it was covered with a black velvet cloth.
For more, unmuseum.com has some good stuff.

Guess someone wanted to recycle the props from Billy Zane's "Phantom" movie.

I ain't excited. Given Hollywood's batting average for sequels, my expectations are pretty low. Does Indy go on this adventure with his grandchildren?

I don't know, given the computer graphics we have these days we could probably revive Han Solo too.

Seeing this, I pictured an old Indy carefully removing a crystal skull from a booby-trapped cave, and simultaneously replacing it with his false teeth so the sudden reduction in weight doesn't set off the booby trap. Of course it does and he's scrambling out with his cane, using the cane to retrieve his hat at the last moment.

I had my money on the following title (from this thread):
"Indiana Jones and the Golden Ponds Retirement Community of Doom"

The crystal skull title might be a little better. might be.

When is the new movie supposed to take place, the '50s? No more evil Nazis to be the antagonists.

I understand it's set in 1957. Hoardes of evil goosestepping Nazis are indeed Spielberg's staple baddies, but I daresay something else can fit the bill here. Unless, of course, and as PhantomWolf says above, it's set in South America.

If it is set in 1957, we should all pettition Spielberg to put in some reference to Sputnik. Nothing much, just maybe a headline on a newspaper in the background or on a radio that gets turned off when a character walks in the room.

No, but the Smithsonian did a few years back. It was in Archeology magazine.

Far be it from you, along with a certain other member, to provide links to your blanket statements. Hardly enough to state all crystal skulls are fake.

Sorry. The Osborne Book of Archeology said that. From now on, I will stop writing the words of others.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did like in one of the newer silence of the lambs movies and use computers to make him look younger.

I thought at first that the poster was a fake when a friend sent me a copy of it.

It looks as convincing as a mermaid in a jar or, indeed, a crystal skull!

As for the skulls themselves, Wikipedia (for all it's worth) says:

The type of (rather poor quality) crystal is Brazilian, and unknown within the Aztec or Maya territories. The study concluded that the skulls were crafted in the 19th century in Germany.

    One possible plot:
...This time the story takes place in a South American jungle...Lost River Delta, a tattered outpost of civilization...Indiana Jones has discovered a long lost pyramid hidden in the dense vegetation...called Temple of the Crystal Skull, in homage to the supernatural and vengeful Crystal Skull said to be the guardian of the temple's secrets. One secret Indy has determined by deciphering the temple's hieroglyphics...is alleged to be the location of the fabled Fountain of Youth...to prevent interlopers from coming in and bathing in the rejuvenating waters, the temple is booby-trapped with untold peril at every turn...This has done little to discourage the curious and those in search of eternal youth...

...On May 22, the movie will hit approximately 4,000 U.S. theaters. The story is set in 1957, and this time Dr. Jones goes up against cold-blooded, Cold War Russkies—led by Cate Blanchett in dominatrix mode—instead of the Nazis he squashed like bugs in previous installments. Making a return alongside Ford is Karen Allen, as Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s pugnacious true love, last seen in the first film (since retitled, rather inelegantly, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark). Rising star Shia LaBeouf joins the cast in a role that no one connected with the film will confirm is the love child of Indy and Marion...

Hey, only two out of the three Indy films have Nazis anyway.
