The season kicked off this week/weekend.

Nice Big East wins by Louisville, West Virginia, and Rutgers.

JoPa and the Nittany Lions did a number on Florida International 59-0. Not a bad way for a coach to start his 42nd year guiding Penn State. Good win by Ohio State too.

My UConn Huskies took care of Duke 45-14. Always good to beat Duke, whether in football or basketball.

On the flip side, Mississippi State alums around here have been very quiet. Perhaps LSU's drubbing of the Bulldogs 45-0 might have something to do with it.

The folks who run the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation (AKA NBC) must have been not too pleased at their team being whupped by Georgia Tech 33-3. Guess Touchdown Jesus took the afternoon off.

And it's probably good that Wolverine's taken a leave of absence, considering what Appalachian State did to Michigan in "The Big House". One of the all-time great upsets.

Meanwhile the boys from Boone must be really whooping it up tonight along with their fans there in Michigan and back home way up in the highlands of western North Carolina. Hope there's not too much use of illegal substances, otherwise some of the celebrants may wind up blowing rock. BTW, I read where one reporter has canceled his reservations for Ann Arbor on September 15th.

Maybe the motivation for the Appalachian State team came from an announcement earlier in the week, when Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina, announced her intentions to attend Appalachian State. Perhaps the Mountaineers figured "The nation will think our coeds are dumb, we've got to show them our football team is smart!"

I'm keeping an eye on Canadian University football. My alma mater holds the canadian record in futility, as they had an 0-47 run, late 80's - mid 90's. If cross-town rivals U of T Varsity Blues go winless again, this season, they will have an 0-48 streak. U of T was handed their 42nd consecutive loss, this past weekend.

Inevitably, you’ll bring up the past, boast of National Championships won 40 years before you were born (those were the daaaaaays!)

You will point out that you have more wins than any other program as though that is relevant to the current season (been playing since the 1870’s)

Go on, ignore that loss to Ohio State in the regular season finale and continue to believe that you’ll defeat your bowl opponent with striking ease (we’ll win by thirteeeeeey!)

So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, oh Emperor of Excuses, and take comfort knowing that when you finish ranked number twenty, you’ll be back to number five when the preseason polls come out next year (Mr. Delusional Michigan Fan!)

So, after four weeks Notre Dame, the team America loves to hate is 0-4. All is well in the world.

Louisville is demonstrating that all the offense in the world can't overcome a defense that can't tackle. Losing to Syracuse? Who do they think they are? Michigan? After all, even Illinois beat the Orange to claim the right to be the true Orange and Blue team in the NCAA.

Speaking of the Illini, 3-1 after beating Indiana. Can you say sleeper? I knew you could. Realistically, if they win one of the next three games (Penn St, Wisconsin, Michigan) I'll be ecstatic. Three of the later games (Minnesota, NU, and Ball State) look to be winnable (yes, I know the last of these three gave Nebraska a run, but Illinois seems to have some defense as opposed to Nebraska. Certainly compared to Louisville). That would leave them at 7-5. OK, it's not a national championship record, but after back to back 2-10 seasons I'll take it. And don't give me this, "Big 10 is weak" stuff. The pundits said that last year and the 11 had a better bowl record than the SEC.

In any case, a crazy year. Cal is looking to win the Axe later this year. Maybe they'll knock of the Trojans. Heck even Duke won a game! My take, LSU will lose to someone this year as will USC. These two may well meet in the championship game, but they won't be undefeated.

In the meantime, lots of football to play. And there is a reason they play the games. Any given Saturday and all that.

That was nice to see. The Dallas Cowboys of the college football world reeling. Always thought TD Jesus was actually a little wide left.

What happened to the Nippy Lion's offense? Nine lousy pernts against Michigan? JoPa, rethink the attack!

Old Miss almost did the impossible against Florida, while some of the sheen has come off Appalachian State after losing to lowly Wofford. That Syracuse thing was embarrassing. I might start calling them Louisville instead of Louaville, again.

Elon put a can of whup on Liberty, which is always good to see. And what a deal, Charleston Southern gets to go to Hawai'i in return for giving up 66 points. Meanwhile Duke has started another streak, plus poetic overtime justice by Georgia over that liar Saban.

My alma mater, Columbia (Go, Lions!), and Yale both won in the same week! Wow! Too bad Central Conn got beat, otherwise it would have been a Nutmeg sweep!

My Huskies are now 4-0 and 1-0 in the Big East after drubbing Pittsburgh 34-14 at the confluence.

Footoball is a nice game and useful for knee joints and for leg muscles. Playing football will be an interesting event on moon's surface, when we kick the ball it may go eighter beyond the boundry of our ground, and also it will take more time to rest on the surface. Suppose we kick the ball towards a player 'x', from the point A exactly in front of the goal net and the 'x' is just standing in the center of the ground, on moon it will rarely go directly to 'x', instead of that eighter it will directly kick "goal in other part of the ground", or it will take more bounces on the platform and then it will rest on the surface. The football is really interesting game. on tv. I have seen many quaralles of the football players.

On a scarier scarier note, the In'juns clenched the AL Central last night. Brings me back to my Jr. High/Early HS days (okay mid 90's, so not that long ago). Go Tribe!

But I'm off topic. The Buckeyes are starting to roll, with a 28-0 lead before the end of the first quarter, I knew it'd be more of a spring practice drill than a game. Great to win that big, but kinda boring. I fell asleep in the second, and missed up until the start of the 4th.

They surpassed Boston? Excellent. I haven't had a chance to check out league standings yet, and I actually didn't watch any baseball this week. Had OSU on saturday, and VS aired the Ireland v. France rugby match from earlier this week yesterday (was very dissapointed, assuming Ireland indeed lost. I got too disgusted after France scored that try about 2/3rd's through the second half and so I turned it off).

Since I grew up in the Forest City in the 50's/60's, I remember such legends as Fred 'Wingy' Whitfield and 'Immortal Joe' Azcue manning the Tribe, with Jimmy Dudley doin' his best to make the inedible palatable. The horrific tease of the late 90's just made it worse.

For those of us who don't really care all that much about the Sox/Yankees, the prospect of, say, an Indians/Cubs World Series would be a true wonder, even if it didn't register above the noise in the ratings.

Same for ND. Being there in the era of Parseghian makes the present mainly sad. Thing is, ND was a dominant force before the NCAA became a Really Big Business. If I would wave that magic wand, I'd put college football back where it belongs, a pleasant weekend diversion and nothing more.

Just got back from watching the Illinois-Penn State game. Man, I'm getting too old for this. My voice is certainly gone for the time being. The Illini botching multiple third downs in the fourth that could have lead to game ending scores, then the defense that was so pourous in the first half coming through with multiple big plays to hold on for the win. The game wasn't certain until the interception with 9 seconds left on third down stopped the last drive.

So, the Illini are 4-1. Michigan comes to town next week after having problems with Northwestern. Suddenly 5-1 doesn't look too impossible. So, until later.

Don't follow football, but I have a great respect for the players at my school.
They run the same distances we do for track, only we do it in shorts and T-shirts and they do it in full gear. That must take real endurance.

Don't follow it all that much, I did catch the Auburn - Florida game though. Quite the day of upsets in the NCAA yesterday.

I did have a few panicky moments watching updates from CIS football. U of T playing at York, both teams 0-4. I just kept seeing 4th quarter, U of T leading 20 - 18, I was quite happy when I found out York won, 21 - 20. U of T's losing streak is now at 46 straight games, one behind the record set by York, late 80's - mid 90's.

Forgive me if I'm just a bit psyched about Illinois. From laughingstock to bowl game (and possible, just possible, Big 10 champ) in one year. With the win today (against Wisconsin, I know, UM in two weeks), a winnable game against Iowa next week, and three more to close out the season 9-3 is not an unreasonable prediction.

Another interesting weekend. Georgia goes down big time as do Clemson and Miami. The OSU-Purdue and FL-LSU games are going on now. Oh, and I suppose there are games going on on the west coast. Sorry, east coast (or midwest in my case) bias showing through.

That was totally insane. I know teams have letdowns but what USC did was ridiculous.

I spent a lot of time flipping between the FL-LSU game and the OSU-Purdue. OSU is looking scary, and LSU had a great comeback to win. Too bad. I was looking forward to seeing Cal and OSU ranked 1-2 in some sort of order.

Oh, and Notre Dame finally won. Who'd have thunk it?

Canada's University football playoffs get underway this weekend. This year's Yates Cup game, will be the 100th in it's history.

The playoffs will finish on November 23rd, with two teams battling for the Vanier Cup.

Congrats to the #3 ranked Manitoba Bisons (12-0) winning the Vanier Cup last night. They defeated #4 ranked St. Mary's Huskies (9-2), for the national championship. Huskies were without their regular starting QB, who was knocked out of action (torn acl) during their semi-final game, against top ranked Laval. One ick moment, in the Vanier Cup, was a clean hit on a Bison player, which broke his femur. The Huskies were still in the game, trailing 13-8 at the half. Final score was 28-10.

NCAA - I'll probably watch the "Iron Bowl" game tonight. I remember watching many of these Auburn-Alabama games back in the 80's.

Not college, but the CFL's Grey Cup game goes tomorrow, Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers will try for a Winnipeg sweep of Canada's football hardware, this weekend.

You guys (as Coach Edsall said) had the superior team. We Huskies made too many mistakes. Your Mr. White is amazing and deserving of the Heisman.
