    200 million pixels

    LA Times: They're big-television watchers

For those whose concept of high-definition centers on whether to buy an LCD or plasma TV, here's a number to chew on: 200 million pixels.

That's enough to provide a picture about 100 times more detailed than the best high-definition TV. And it's enough to have made UCI's newest research tool, dubbed the HIPerWall, a hit among scientists throughout Southern California.

"It's exciting," said Joerg Meyer, a professor of computer graphics and visualization who helped develop the screen's software. "This display has higher resolution than the human retina can see."

Pushing that many pixels would appear to be a signficant hardware and software challenge.

Of course, I would kill to have an infrared projection array that had a significant fraction of that many pixels.

    For a little space topicality:

A large world view from NASA: dude stands before large image of earth.

    Thanks.

We put together a video wall down in the lab a few weeks ago for demos and test displays, however, with a lot fewer and somewhat bigger monitors.

I'll have to show that image to the guy that did the procurement.

Gee; I can't wait to see the resolution on my TV at home.

    Check this out:

Now to surround a tornado with a lot of these cameras to get a good 3D image of the funnel, and play it on the screen.
