Thread: Can anyone recommend MMORPGs?

    Can anyone recommend MMORPGs?

Does anyone else play them? I've been spending the last couple of months playing The Damned Isle, which is a free browser based one, is there anything similar out there?

I have googled a bit, but I'd prefer a recommendation over walking in blind. TDI is point-and-click and no software needed, so, simple to play but really addictive - something along the same lines would be great.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers.

Well, I've been playing Fly for Fun for a couple of months now, and it is a pretty fun (and Free) MMORPG.

However, it does require you to download an installer (also free, but it takes a couple of hours or so).

Even though it is a 3D MMORPG, it really doesn't take all that much horsepower to run the game at an acceptable framerate.

    It's a fairly straight-foward point-and-click game.

    It requires:
A Pentium III, 1 GHz CPU (or better).
    256MB of RAM (or more).
    Direct X 9.0 (or higher).
GeForce 3 Ti 200 (or better).

But to be fair, I'd reccomend having:
    A 2 GHz Single-Core Pentium 4 (or the equavalant Athlon 64) CPU.
    512MB of RAM.
    Direct X 9.0c.
And a GeForce 6 series card...
But that's just me I guess.

Of course, if all else fails, there's always zSNES...

Just found FlyFF a week ago. Got my wife hooked too. They allow you to have as many accounts as you've got email addresses. Plus, you can have as many of them running simultaneously as you have computers. So my wife and I have characters that party together, and then I've got a second char on the same server to play when she's busy. It might not be as polished as WoW or LotR, but considering I still log onto text-based MUDs on occasion, graphics aren't high on my priority list.

To clarify the installer size, it's over 550MB. So if you're on dial-up, it's one of those start downloaded at bedtime and you might be done come morning situations. Plus there's a patch you have to manually install because there's a glitch on automatic updater. Well, I'll take that back because a big patch came through a few days ago, so they might have fixed it.

World of Warcraft is pretty awesome, there's tons to do in it and it'll keep you hooked for ages. Lots of solo stuff to do, but the endgame is pretty much geared for groups.

EVE Online is also good if you want a SF MMO, but it's more geared toward PvP. It's also obscenely pretty to look at.

In the "not-free" category, I'll add City of Heroes/City of Villains Two different games that can be played as one. Easy to solo or team. It's based on comic book super heroes or super villains. Semi heavy requirements to play it, though it is possible over dial up. There is a PVP side to it, but it's really hard to be solo in that. Cost to play is US$15 per month for either or both games. 11 Severs and 8 or 12 (one game/both games) characters per server.

I'm on there with Tog. However, I also managed to tinker around in the beta of a game called "Fury" this weekend. I was floored. If you like pretty graphics, PvP, and a very technical and strategic game, you may want to pick this up in October.

Just to expand a bit on Fury... it's like a cross between a MMORPG and Counterstrike. There's free-for-all matches, capture-the-crystal, and team vs team so far. You gain experience by using skills in combat (don't need to win or kill foes, but it doesn't hurt), and new equipment is generated at the end of the match. You get three slots to bid for stuff. There's 4 different "Schools" if you will, and each has two subgroups... melee and ranged. By using skills from a school, you get experience you can spend on "trials" which give you new skills in that group. You're not restricted at all... you can mix and match like mad, as long as the skills don't use "opposing elements". Four element type, seems like all schools have all elements. It's kind of confusing, but bear with me, here: During a match, skills generate or consume elemental charges. If you have wind charges, for example, and use a nature skill that also generates a nature charge, then you get no nature charges and lose one wind, because they are opposing. Same with fire and water. What these charges do is force you to use a series of smaller skills to build charges, then consume them to whip off a more powerful ability. Pretty interesting. Also, the number of skills available! Must be over a thousand, easy.

Wasn't it Doodler who said that MMORPG stood for Many Men Online Role Playing Girls?

    Thanks for the responses.

The one I play doesn't have sexes at the moment, though apparently the Goblins are female. You choose a race and a class and go from there - there's the usual LotR races, but you can also play spiders and lizards - I play a rat.

What I was hoping for was something free with no software - is that really uncommon? I prefer it that way because I'm not always on the same computers, but it sounds like most others are bought or installed..

    Yup.

    My personal recommends:

    EVE Online
    World of Warcraft
Star Wars Galaxies looks like it might finally have stabilized enough to look at, though I ain't touchin' it again.

    Avoids:

Matrix Online (pretty game, but VERY VERY grindy and very empty)
EQ2 (Very pretty, but VERY graphics intensive and incredibly group oriented)
Entropia Universe (unless you've got more money than God, for a "free" game, I dropped $700 in three months).
Vanguard (Many grouses about this one, particularly the FFA PvP servers)
Lineage/Lineage 2 (unless you enjoy a game dominated by Korean sweat shop bots.)

Looking good on the horizon: Warhammer 40k, Stargate, Star Trek, Conquest of the New World (an MMO that lets you play up to three toons simultaneously)

Guild Wars occasionally devours my soul for weeks at a time. Very fun game, beautiful graphics, and it has no subscription fees. It seems to be getting more oriented toward player versus player stuff, but there's enough PvE content to keep you going for years.

I'll chip in another vote for City of heroes/villians and/or Guild Wars.

I'm currently obsessing over Pirates of the Burning Sea. It's not out yet (set for a fall release), so I can't speak truly speak for it, but my goodness if I can't stop drooling over it.

I've heard some downsides, though. You can't permanently alter the worldmap. After X number of ports are captured, the map resets and you start all over. I imagine they'll have retention issues once the Sisyphean threshold is crossed.

Isn't EVE Online mostly space flight/dogfights? I haven't tried it yet. I need to cancel my WoW subscription, as I haven't played in about 2 or 3 months (nothing against the game, it's totally awsome, but I played for a few hours every night for about 7 months, it ran it's coarse for me.)

I'm looking for a new MMO, was hoping to get into the Dawn of War beta, but apparently didn't. I prefer one set up like the WoW PvP servers; where it's two sides with their own goals, but they can fight with eachother along the way. That's why I haven't tried LOTR:Online, it's PVP seemed more of an afterthought than part of the actual game.

Blizzard is supposed to be making World of StarCraft now too. Can't wait for that. Should be pretty fun.

EverQuest 1 is still out there and they did open a couple Legacy Servers (to make gameplay like it was before the Luclin expansion I believe). I played EQ1 for almost 7 years and really enjoyed it for about 6 of those.

Then I switched to GuildWars but got bored with it because there was only one character progression path. Every character followed the exact same story arc and there was no way to go outside that. Now I admit I quit before the 1st expansion, so don't know if they fixed that.

Then I played WoW. I really like the gameplay. There is ample solo material and quests, the character balance is pretty decent as long as you play PvE (in PvP rogues rule, and the Horde own the battlegrounds). I liked it a lot, just outgrew the whole gaming thing now I guess.

Doodler, have you played Vanguard? I've been keeping an eye on that game for a couple years now as McQuaid and his team developed it. I was stoked that it was going to be owned by Microsoft, and depressed when I saw SOE bought it, as SOE would likely ruin anything good about it. Then when I looked at the system requirements I decided not to bother with it.

On a side note, the company developing SG1 are here in the Phoenix metro area and my brother was hired to do a photo shoot for them. He got to see a lot of the character designs and stuff. He couldn't tell me anything because of the NDA, but he did say it looks awesome. Hopefully I'll be involved in the Beta for that game.

    Psst, City of ...

Heroside or Villainside youcan play mostly solo. There are 4 PVP zones which are totally optional to enter, as well as an arena where you can PVP with people on your own side. PVP isn't really balanced for solo battles though. There is also a zone opening soon(tm) that will let heroes and villains team up to fight a common foe.

There are a total of 10 different classes to play (5 per side) and each has at least 4 primary sets and 4 secondary sets to choose from. Some as many as 8.

There is enough content that you might be able to see it all on 2 characters. There is no way to do it with one. At last not on the Hero side.

There isn't loot like in other games. There are drops and you can make stuff with them if you want, but not doing it won't really hurt you.

For a slightly out of date reference site for new players check out http://coh-tog.home.comcast.net.

I played both Heros and Villians for a while. It was *okay* but I didn't love it. I loved my "Captian Cobain" character, who wore converse and grungy jeans with a plaid shirt But I didn't find the game that exciting.

    How about this:

Anyone know any good free single player RPGs? I can't stand multiplayer games.

  21. #21
Guildwars is your best chance. It's free to play, and every time you leave one of the main cities your zone is instanced, only you exist there. The only place you see other players is in the city and you can turn off chat. Also, there are NPC's that you can "hire" to go quest with you. You can have a full group (healers, nukers, tanks, etc) eithout having to deal with a single other player.

Good single player RPGs? Get yourself a SNES. Chrono Trigger. Final Fantasy 2 and 3. Secret of Mana. Shadowrun was decent. I have heard good things about Breath of Fire.

I always liked the NES game Li'l Ninja Brothers, too. It's hard to find, but well worth the search. River City Ransom was another good one.

EVE isn't dogfighting, since the ship controls are not twitch. Its fleet and squadron maneuvers from the point of view of a starship captain.

PvE content is largely soloable, with new level 5 missions for capital ship pilots or groups of people in ships up to battleship.

There are other elements: manufacturing, mining, exploration, empire building, but its all done from the command chair of a ship. There is some intention to expand the game to being able to wander around outside of your ship, but then only as an aside to the main game played in the ships.

Heh, I used to play the non-electronic version of Shadowrun.

Yeah, I'll go double for Chrono Trigg. and Secret of Mana. I've never been a big RPG fan (I like MMORPG's because I like MMO's), but Chrono Trigg and Secret of Mana managed to be in a genre that I don't particularly like and still make my list of all-time favorite games. Secret of Mana because it reminded me of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Chrono Trigger because...well, it's just very fun.

The Sega Genesis version of Shadowrun was far superior. Its mechanics echoed those of the pen and paper version perfectly with an interesting story and a fairly well executed (for its time) representation of 2050 Seattle.

I still haven't finished crying tears of blood over the desecration of Shadowrun in the new version released by Microshlock.

I'm afraid that those are exactly the type of RPGs that kept me away from the genre for years. I really don't know why I don't care for them - I just... er... don't.

Guildwars seems interesting, but if I'm paying for something, it will have no mandatory multiplayer.

    Call me picky.

Well, you could always just pretend those other players are NPC's. If you turn off chat you will have no required interaction with the others at all. I don't like playing with other people very much either, so I just used the cities to unload my inventory at the bank/vendor and then headed back out into the zone. In the zone instance, once you kill a creature it is gone for good so you can kill the area you're in and then hang out.

It's an ok game, and may very well be better since the days I played it, but I was always wishing there was a little more content.

Of course, if you want zero MMO, then it's not the right choice I don't really know of any full-content PC-based RPG's that are single player.

MMORPGs are as addictive as crystal meth. Just to let you know.

There was a couple arrested in Nevada Monday on child neglect charges due to video game addiction.

One of the quotes from that article is this:

Last month, experts at an American Medical Association meeting backed away from a proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder, saying it had to be studied further. Some said the issue is like alcoholism, while others said there was no concrete evidence it's a psychological disease.
