Weed in NM: new medical marijuana law

SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico has a new medical marijuana law with a twist: It requires the state to grow its own.

The law, effective Sunday, not only protects medical marijuana users from prosecution — as 11 other states do — but requires New Mexico to oversee a production and distribution system for the drug.

The state Department of Health must issue rules by Oct. 1 for the licensing of marijuana producers and in-state, secured facilities, and for developing a distribution system.

I've heard that marijuana is actually quite beneficial for treating cachexia associated with AIDS or chemotherapy. I'm just wondering how NM plans to keep the weed for medical use only, given that it would probably be grown on large plots.

Here in California medical marijuana is legal. Doesn't seem to be too much of a conflict though, the Feds just bust everyone as if our laws didn't exist and the state doesn't do anything about it.

The drug laws have always confused me... somehow we managed to hold civilization together for the first 150 years without such draconian laws. Now certainly there was room for improvement, but perhaps a bit of regulation and consumer protection might have been a better course...

Yes, but then there wouldn't have been a percieved threat to demonize, and rabble-rousing demagogues wouldn't have been able to frighten their followers into voting them more power.

Whilst I will admit that Reefer Madness! in many ways represents some the best the American Cinema has ever produced, I am not sure it was worth what we gave up.

I'm agin the war on drugs for a lot of reason, mainly my libertarian philosophy of course, but the main thing is something this is the latest example of:

Feds can seize half a house. Now, somehow I doubt the wife here would make out as well if she tries to "divorce" the feds.

Anyway this run-amok asset seizure is something that really sticks in my craw. State and local governments do it to. It's absolute greed. Now, they've managed to get assest seizure in the "civil" category. The way it works is you have to prove the govt. wrongly seized your assets to get them back. They have to prove nothing.

No actually... I was responding to the idea that the European contingent had been thrown out of every decent country in Europe. It was meant to be ironic... maybe the immigrants from other countries will balance out the those thrown out of "decent European countries". Sorta loses its irony when it's spelled out like that...

Actually, I left off an additional comment out of concern that it might be stepping a bit too close to politics. I find additional irony in the fact that that when Europeans began settling here no one really cared much about the native americans. During the formative years of our country, our ancestors, including many of our revered founding fathers, had little or no concern about forcing native americans off their lands. However, today many in this country are very concerned about immigration and keeping out "those who don't belong".

There was a story just the other day in which a woman ran for local office. She won but in doing so it was discovered that she was not born in this country, but brought here at the age of 1 year. She never knew, but now faces deportation even though she has lived here all her life and all of ther children and their families are considered citizens.

Apology accepted... I genuinely meant it as ironic... its a touchy point because the woman I love was separated from me to the day she died because she was Iranian and her government and ours did not play well together in the sandbox...

I have also worked in a number of cases to stop the blind stupidity if immigration officials who seem more interested in showing quotas than making fair, compassionate decisions...

Sometimes we want Federal Law to trump State Law and sometimes we want the opposite.

See what I mean? Tempers are flaring on this right now. Every little comment will have tons of stuff read into it, both what is said and even what is not said.

As an example of how hot this is getting, my (79 year old) father sits on the board of a certain organization. The question came up whether to support or oppose a certain measure before the senate.

That led to a question if the minutes of that meeting should be accurately recorded, because so much profanity was used. You had men in their 60s and 70s about ready to fight each other (which would've been interesting to watch, actually), one particularly hot pair of debators ended up where one actually called the other outside. There are feathers ruffled there that will not soon be settled. And it will family consequences as well, as the families of those old coots will now probably hate each other.

Gary Johnson,our former Governor (who,when re-elected said "I'd like to thank all the Democrats in New Mexico 'cause I know there ain't enough Republicans to re-elect me!") caused a heckuva controversy when he said that the War on Drugs wasn't working & needed to be re-thought.That was turned into "Johnson wants to legalize heroin! OMG!!!".

During his 1st campaign,he was asked if he'd ever done cocaine or pot.He answered honestly,saying "Yes,just like everyone else I went to college with..." while glaring at the roomful of reporters.....several of whom he'd gone to college with.

The issue was never brought up again in either campaign.

My wife the pharmacist has no problem with legal medical weed,she says it can be beneficial for some people,I defer to her knowledge.

I forsee a lot of new medical claims from previously healthy people

Good to know the person who appointed the key Supreme Court justices who will probably rule against this state law, never had anything to do with illegal drugs.

Similar to how the the other fellow who rode into office on a "family values" platform never used a TVMA obscenity towards Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
