I don't think I should post the headline, but the story is here.

The highlights are that a 35 year old mother of a 13 year old girl helped the girl take three (fully inappropriate) pictures with the intent of sending them to a 30 year old "close family friend" in another state. They knew the man wanted to have a grown up relationship with the gir,l but everyone agreed to wait until she was 18. The pictures were to hold him over until then.

The mother, who The Tribune is not identifying to protect the child’s identity, told police she asked her daughter "if she was sure she wanted to send these photos," the document states.
I guess that counts as good judgement in a minimalist sort of way.

The article does not say how this was uncovered (so to speak).

(Fake) Elvis and his wife left the building, but left the kids: http://www.norwichbulletin.com/x1245...#axzz213tJjOMQ

The excuse? "she was outside smoking."

Obviously the fault of the kids. If they hadn't been screaming for an hour, the night clerk never would have called the cops (said the hotel night clerk).
    (This was a joke.)

I've never had that issue with kids, but I did go into someone's room one night to get their unattended dog. Once I got him to the desk, he quieted right down. I really don't know if I'd do that with a kid. us night guys have a bit of a reputation for being creepy.

I did have a kid get up to use the bathroom and pick the wrong door. He wound up in the hallway at 3 AM and had no idea which room was his. He also didn't know his mother's new last name, so the best I could do was narrow it down to the second floor. About the time I was going to start calling all the rooms on that floor that might be missing a kid, the dad woke up, saw him gone, and came looking.

I blame the Twilight series for this sort of behavior.

Nothing says I love my kids more than giving them a pet - just make sure it's not that can and will eat them.

Thank goodness! Can you image if the dogs were organizing these attacks?

Must've just been a copycat attack. Or I guess a copydog attack.

About 20 years ago, a local (suburban?) woman had a "tame" raccoon. She left it and her infant daughter alone for a few minutes.

The raccoon ate the little girl's fingers.

Much more tragically, it's been reported that Adam Lanza, who shot six adults and twenty children to death before killing himself (these murder-suicides always get the sequence wrong: kill yourself first) was regularly taken by his mother to go shooting, even though it seems that he had some fairly significant psychiatric problems. She was, of course, his first victim (and her guns didn't help her), but he may have been better served by more time with mental health professionals and less time with firearms.

So, she qualifies for the "Brilliance in Parentlng" thread.

Am I the only one here?

The mother's logic seems to be "magic should work better than proven methods because, you know, it's magical."

Yes, there may be long-term effects of radiation treatment, but at least the kid will have a long term. Similarly, I recently read about a mother down in Oregon, I believe, who was given her daughter THC oil equivalent to something like four joints a day as cancer treatment and didn't understand why anyone was upset about it. She's one of those types who thinks it will cure everything--and used it herself while pregnant and breastfeeding.

I just had a retail flashback, to a time when I was 23 and nearly completely carefree.

A customer bought a ton of back to school supplies at my store. As she was cashing out, it started raining very hard. She and her son were the only customers in the store; this was mostly due to the fact that we were trying hard to go out of business, but that is another story.

After about 10 minutes she asked if she could come back for her stuff after the rain stopped. I said "Not a problem, leave the cart with me and I will put your name on it." I ran the cart to the storeroom and ran back to my register. And found her child sitting on the floor.

When she said "leave her stuff" she meant the child too. He stayed with me for about 30 minutes before my boss noticed him sitting on the counter eating candy and drinking pop.

My bosses response was "Where did he get the pop?"

I replied "I ran next door and bought it."

My boss looked pained. "You are the only register person here and you left the store?"

My long answer to that was, as 20 something cashier, I wasn't really required to think things through. I though that this is what you did when someone abandoned a child.

Eventually she came back for the child, but from my now enforced position at the register, it appears that she was having a legal problem with the police.

I'd like to think, things like this made me a better parent.

The article said that was part of the judge's reasoning: to have "quality of life," you must have life.

I could see a quality of life issue if the treatment was going to cause you to loose all of your limbs or something more horrible, but this is a case of "this is standard treatment" and most people live. Not that cancer is standard, but this sounded like a good outcome to me. Not exactly "extreme medical measures" by my standard.

My daughter had a tumor on her face (and some other problems) and she went through some harsh stuff, but she got though it. Nearly all of that had to do with having good advice from a good doctor. Thanks to the doctors and other people involed, our main worry is getting to dance and scouts in the same night and not how are we making it through today.
