NASA at it again with non-parallel shadows !!!

I found this picture on the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal.

    http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/Hi...-S69-35306.jpg

Can you believe it. None of the shadows are parallel. The shadow of the Saturn V and the launch tower go one way, the shadows from the trailers go another way, the shadows from the spherical tank in back go another. NASA can't even fake the launch pad right. Just kidding.

But it does go to show that there are plenty of pictures out there with the appearance of non-parallel shadows.

Yes, clearly a crude fake. Do we really believe that NASA would allow the construction of a skateboard park (mid left of image) so close to a 7,000,000 lb thrust launch vehicle? Sloppy NASA, sloppy!!

Funny you should mention those, I was just about to expose my vast ignorance by asking what in the heck those things are. Blast deflectors of some kind? (I'm sure there are several people here who could identify and explain the function of just about every detail in this photo.)

Great scene. Reminds me of trying to explain basic physics to the likes of Cosmic "Spontaneously means 'at the same time'" Dave.

You'd think by now, NASA would have hired a few photoshop experts (or at least watched a few episodes of Call for Help and The Screen Savers) and fixed all these stupid shadow problems. I mean 40 years later and they haven't produced a single image that would fool anybody!

    *Bing!*

Spot on, DataCable. Yes, they're blast deflectors. One of them sat underneath the Saturn V, and deflected the exhaust laterally. Otherwise the blast would hit the ground, rebound, and damage the base of the rocket.

BTW, don't worry about asking questions like that. There are probably other people who didn't know who weren't game enough to ask. Now you can show off to others by talking about the skate ramps they developed with Apollo technology!

You will also notice that the shadows prove that the Saturn V was sharply bent in the middle. Any fool knows you could never successfully launch a bent rocket.

Well the picture was surely taken in central Florida. Note the nearby trailer park, lower left.

A typical Saturn V launch would erode about a quarter inch of concrete off the facing of a blast deflector.

David Percy's argument about shadow direction is that terrain is not a factor (at least in Apollo 11 photos) because the ground was flat. And how does he know it was flat? Because it looks flat in the photographs. Ironically his star witness David Groves then bases his estimate of the height of the camera in AS11-40-5903 on the depth of the depression which he derives from measuring how the shadow of Aldrin's leg is affected by it. So much for flatness.

It also helps that NASA likes to roast skater punks.

Ahh.. The ultimate temptation to, and defence against, trespassers!
