Okay, this is kind of a tragic story, where a little boy lost fingers in a moving walkway at an Ikea store. The reason it's in this thread, though, is because of this:
So they amputated the fingers which had already been severed and one of which they couldn't find?[H]is index and middle fingers were severed.
One rolled down the travelator, the other was never found. He was rushed to hospital where both fingers were amputated.
I'm guessing that he lost a part of each finger at the store and they had to amputate the remaining part. That, or they had to amputate additional fingers because they were also mangled in the accident. Either way, it reads oddly.
EDIT: Because I forgot the link!
Given the cause of the injury it's likely to have been very messy, so making a clean cut removing a substantial part of the fingers was the best solution.
I think I'd also call cutting off e.g. half a finger amputation even if it was in shreds at the time.
But I'd probably call it "amputating the rest of the finger".

I just caught this in the help of a very well known product.
This input replaces any existing content. If the stream is empty, any current content is removed.
I'm not having my best day, but I'm clueless as to what that is. All I can think of is what might happen if you crossed the streams.
No; it's technical programming stuff within a product.
It was the thought of "removing the contents of an empty container" and the interplay between remove in one case and replace in an another even though both situations are simply "It ends up with what you put in it, no matter what was there before".
Here's another example of a useless adjective, and a missing adjective.
GM’s Orion Assembly To Pull Energy From The Sun
Either the solar array produces that amount of electricity only once a year, and the CO2 savings is over the lifetime of the cells, or they put "annually" in the wrong place.will soon hold a solar array with enough capacity to annually power 45 homes in Michigan.
...
In total, the energy saved will be equivalent to avoiding 261 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

My only question at this point is if they know when it's going to take place, or when it's going to transpire.“So that’s why we’ve closed the road, we don’t know how quickly it’s going to happen and how quickly it’s going to occur.”
From this CNN article about the Curiosity rover:
Well, I suppose that size and weight are related. The rover’s size – it's 9 feet, 10 inches long and 9 feet, 1 inch wide - makes it too heavy to land with airbags like earlier rovers.

Walmart shoplifter pulls out bag of marijuana
I can't figure out how the word "accidentally" applies to this situation. He had no way of avoiding it.A suspected shoplifter that was told to empty his pockets accidentally pulls out a bag of marijuana.

There's some truth to that. I have a friend who moved to the US from India, got married and had two children. Recently, his family decided to return to India. The two children (approximate ages 8 & 12) were given a test prior to entry into the local school system. They scored quite well...except in English.
