I'm going to try my favorite star:
http://www.bautforum.com/archive/index.php/t-20128.html
What I'm getting:
http://server1.sky-map.org/starview?...ect_id=1066765
They are putting it out 230 some odd parsecs out. I thought there might have been some error with Hipparchos IIRC.
A .29 ly close approach bears watching--even if it is 800,000 years in the future...
HD 12208 is a giant star 235 parsecs away; it almost certainly won't get here in 800,000 years. If it is coming towards us at such a fantastic rate the path couldn't be predicted accurately enough to be sure of a 0.29 light year miss.
But I suspect the speed is wrong; this star might be a binary, and the motion detected could be just the movement of one component. Or the Hipparchos distance might be wrong for the same reason or a different reason, or both.
That is a fantastic site, by the way. I like the way it gives a load of references for each star.
have you guys tried StarChartGL? Awesome program. It works great on my laptop. http://www.starchartgl.cjb.net/
Check it out.
