This thread isnt that popula!!!
I wonder if there is a good Apollo moon-landing simulator out there, which is compatible with Playstation 2?
I'm not really interested in cheats, but I am interested in knowing more about released games.
For example, I read good reviews of Final Fantasy XII recently. I am wondering about giving it a go - but as I haven't played any of the other eleven (strangely titled) games, I would like to know if number XII is a suitable place to join.
Also, as regards combat - I don't mind the occasional fight to keep me on edge, but I am much more interested in narrative and exploration. I play a lot of PS2 games with my wife, with me on the controls, her making suggestions and coming up with ideas. She will get bored if she has to sit watching me fighting (or rather dying) all the time - and for that reason Project Zero got put back on the shelf.
The games we've really enjoyed include: Ico (and we've also got Colossus), the Silent Hill series, Broken Sword, Shadow of Memories, Prince of Persia (although the most recent one got shelved when the sheer impossibility of the fighting got silly) and Syberia (although the sequel is horrible - great story, lousy gameplay). Any recommendations welcome.
There was one a few years ago that was pretty good from wht I hear. I have no idea of the name, but the description might fing a bell.
You begin the game by being murdered, or witnessing a murder. You then travel back in time to stop it from happening, only y be killed in a different way. I worked with a guy that played it for qhuite a while and he really enjoyed it.
I'm Not Evil.
An evil person would do the things that pop into my head.
That one is Shadows of Memories, in my list above. It is also called Shadow of Destiny but the name was changed because it made an unfortunate acronym.
Paul, I would say that Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy XII are the ideal games to play with your wife.
I just got a Nintendo Wii and my wife and I are having fun with that at the moment (she keeps beating me at baseball but I'm better at golf!), but we have Final Fantasy XII lined up to play next on the PS2. We have played through many Japanese RPGs together and always thoroughly enjoy them!
Why not let her have a go with the controller too? This style of RPG is rarely about manual dexterity, its more about planning and solving puzzles and exploring and making notes.
Thank you for your thoughts, speedfreek.
We both want a Wii, but at the moment my work situation is in a state of flux. Once that's sorted out we might well get one... Unless we decide to get a PS3 instead!
I occasionally get Clare to use the controller when the game does not depend on manual dexterity - in Broken Sword, for instance, every few hours one of us would chuck the controller at the other and say, "Here, you can drive for a bit!" But she doesn't enjoy fighting, say, or the Dahaka run on Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within. OTOH she's brilliant when things get hectic, and I'm tightly focused on a fight - she'll say things like, "Make for that bar at the top right," or "Try and get to that second door - the first looks blocked," or whatever. There's a marvellous feeling of collaboration then.
(Obviously if we got a Wii I would make sure she used the controls!)
Clare is also a big fan of Miyazaki and similar anime people. I got the feeling Final Fantasy slightly resembles some of their films - do you know if this is right? And do you need knowledge of past Final Fantasy games to enjoy later ones? (Inc we didn't like the Final Fantasy film, but I don't think it had much to do with the games.)
Thanks again for your comments, and I'd welcome any more thoughts.
I only caught it because I was wondering why it went under two names.
It is a pretty good game, all in all, but let down by some needlessly frustrating aspects. Quite often you know what you're supposed to do, and you have what you need, but you can't do it anyway. For example, at one point there is a poorly secured swinging metal sign in easy reach which would make perfect armour to prevent the stabbing that you know is coming shortly. But you can only take it if you have (or haven't) done a certain thing earlier in the game.
And the ending I got left a load of loose ends. I think I could sort some of them out if I went back and played again, but, good though it is, it isn't quite that good.
For all that, it does convey the feeling of actually travelling through time, and the various paradoxes are handled well. I particularly like the changes of visual style to indicate what era you're in, including one that made me think of Flemish painters.
In short, it's a game I remember with great affection, but not enough to make me go back and replay it to get a different ending.
Well their is going to be a new resident evil game next year.
Resie 4!!!

Ah, so you and your wife are interested in deep storylines, and/or anime style eh?
Well, here are some older games that I can recommend:
---PSOne Games---
Final Fantasy VII (7)
Grandia
Legend Of Legaia
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete
Xenogears
---PS2 Games---
Grandia III
Wild ARMs Alter Code: F
Wild ARMs 3
Wild ARMs 4
Dragon Quest VIII
---GameCube Games---
Tales of Symphonia
Skies Of Arcadia: Legends
They'll probably be marked down in price at your local game store, if you can find them.
You could also try renting them at your local Blockbuster or what have you.
Oh, and in case you didn't already know, if you are stumped in a game and don't want to pay for a Strategy Guide book, you can head on over to www.gameFAQs.com ^_^
My list could be a lot longer, but I'm way behind on my gaming; ie: I have full access to my Uncle's Gaming Library (It's HUGE), but I haven't beaten all of them yet...
I didn’t recommend any game I didn't complete (and enjoy) first hand.
EDITED TO ADD
Wow! I can't believe I left out the Zeldas!
While it's true that they have more fighting in them than Ico, they are still some of the best games I've ever played, and are definately at least worth a rent.
---Game Cube---
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC Version - I don't have a Wii)
Also for the Game Cube are remakes of the N64 games:
"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time"
"The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask"
They were released on a special bonus disk that people got for free when they either bought a Game Cube for a while, or registered a certian number of games at nintendo.com.
Every so often I see it on sale at a local GameStop for about $20, but they go fast.
Oh, and since this thread was origonally about cheats and hints, here's one of my favorites:

Hi Cookie
Thanks for your recommendations.
We're playing Tomb Raider Legend at the moment (not deep, but cheap and easy!) and might think about Final Fantasy VII if I see it going cheap.
Zelda's on the list when I get a Wii!
