Nice picture, but could you please crop it next time? It took me a while to scroll around to actually find Venus.

I agree. Better to crop such images.
I am most interested in the equipment you used to obtain this image. Prime focus or afocal? Did you record AVI's first and then stack the images with Registax?

Shouldn't Venus have shown some phase last night? A bit of a slice off of it?

    Sorry about the big image.
I used my sony cybershot H2 with an attached teleconverter lens and used a tripod. I believe I used the twilight setting. This wasn't an avi. I haven't quite figured out how to use registax yet but would love some pointers. I didn't use a telescope for these shots.

I thought so too but maybe since I wasn't using a telescope maybe it didn't show up.

Venus was only 12 arcseconds wide last night. Without a telescope, you're not going to get much of an image.

Yes, that image may just be the out-of-focus dot of light.

This is a Stellarium representation of what Venus should have looked like last night. I have a feeling that you have enlarged your original image far too much. Can you post the original raw image exactly as you obtained it from the camera? Maybe you did carch the gibbous shape in the original.

Thanks for shrinking it, but now it's not detailed. I was hoping for a crop instead of a shrink. Especially, after reading some of the responses on Venus' phases and such.

It looks way out of focus to me.

Most people try to keep in-line images in discussions to some-thousand bytes not millions, with dimensions in the hundreds, not thousands, of pixels, a sub-hundred pixel thumbnail even better.

Anyway, to me, too, it looks way out of focus. Any detail you see on that Venus looks to be dust on a lens that is coming into focus.

Nice moon shot in that other thread (I won). That's about as large as you should go in-line, and probably just for good stuff like that.

[nitpick]Keeping in mind that since marycc is in the Northern Hemisphere (I think) and did not use a telescope, then the view would be the reverse of your simulation. [/nitpick]

Here's a cookie, if you are a Mary: probably my prettiest ambigram (words readable more than one way -- like also upside-down) ever:

Edit: Come to think of it, you maybe could go back and edit those article with really big in-line pictures to use links instead.
Edit: Looks like you did. Thanks.

Overall a good try, and take those pointers as a tool to grow on future Astro Photos. Clear Skies

How do I use this in my signature?

I don't know. I do not think images work in automatic signatures. You wouldn't want to replace the nice award-winning moon image in your avatar with it. It would probably be unwelcome to explicitly include it in-line in every article. Maybe you can't figure out a way to use it here. Save it and use it somewhere else. Make your SO wear it as a tattoo. Embroider it on a sweater. (The large size is http://www.01101001.com/images/mary.gif . If you ever need a smaller one, start with the large one and shrink it down.)
