HEAVEN'S GATE II: THE PLANET X CULT

Truth Be Told, USA (Skeptic Wire) - Nancy Lieder, who claims that a
"Planet X" will destroy the Earth on May 15th, 2003, sounds like a
female version of Marshall Applewhite with a continuing prediction of
impending doom and an object approaching Earth.

Applewhite was the leader of the Heaven's Gate Cult which committed mass
suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California(an upscale suburb of San Diego)
on the evening of March 26th, 1997 and were discovered in the early
morning hours of March 27th by police officers who were tipped off to
    the suicides by former members.

The cult believed that a UFO was following the Hale-Bopp Comet and it
was a signal that the Earth would soon be "recycled"(destroyed) and the
era of human beings was at an end. Obsessed with Star Wars, Star Trek
and various other science fiction programs and movies, the Heaven's Gate
cult was totally unable to tell the difference between fiction and
    reality.

Applewhite and his cult believed that they would rise to a level beyond
human when they shed their containers, a cryptic reference to suicide.
The cult committed mass suicide by eating poison applesauce after they
covered themselves in purple shrouds and wore black Nike shoes. Among
the more bizzare beliefs of the Heaven's Gate cult was the idea of alien
hybrids aboard the UFO and castration of male members of the cult.

The cult became aware of the Hale Bopp comet and the supposed "UFO"
after listening to frauds like Chuck Shramek and Courtney Brown claiming
that an object was following the Hale-Bopp Comet on the nationally
syndicated Coast to Coast AM hosted by Art Bell. Although Bell later
did a show claiming the "object" was a fake, the damage was already done
to the Heaven's Gate cult, who were true believers in the "UFO", when
    they killed themselves.

Now we fast forward to 2002 and Nancy Lieder. Lieder claims to be an
enhanced alien contactee, believes in reincarnation, believes an object
is approaching Earth and believes that the majority of people on Earth
will be destroyed. All of these beliefs are personal belief traits
shared by the deceased Marshall Applewhite. Lieder also uses phrases
like "incarnate into a hybrid body after we die", a phrase that's very
similar allegorically to Applewhites "shedding containers"; both of
which are cryptic references to suicide.

In an eerie parallel to the build up of the Hale-Bopp fiasco and the
Heaven's Gate suicides, Lieder has been claiming that a planet called
"Planet X", which is based on an ancient Sumerian belief that a planet
approaches the Earth every 3600 years, will approach the Earth and
    destroy civilization. With her website,

    http://www.zetatalk.org

    several appearances on Jeff Renses "Sightings" program;

    http://www.rense.com

    and on Art Bell's "Coast to Coast AM";

    http://www.artbell.com

Lieder has been actively recruiting members for her "Planet X Cult" by
needlessly scaring people with doom and gloom.

Lieder has been shamefully taking advantage of "post-Sept 11th" fears
by spreading hysteria and paranoia about this fictional Planet X
approaching the Earth. With the thousands of people who have been
defending her ludicrous claims, she's doing a better job at scaring
    people than Osama Bin Laden.

Lieder even goes as far to claim the government, all scientists, the
mass media and observatories are covering up "Planet X" so she can
project an image of credibility to a gullible audience who follows her
every word. This one of the main traits of cult brainwashing; any
thought or idea outside the paradigm of the cult is a lie. With her
website and appearances on the radio, Lieder is performing cult
brainwashing on a massive scale to millions of potential cult members.
Although Lieder claims she's not recruiting followers, this is a total
bald faced lie based on her actions.

With a lot of traits similar to Heaven's Gate, it's only a matter of
time before Lieder gives the order to thousands of true believers to
commit mass suicide just before the fictional Planet X fails to arrive
so she'll protect her credibility with her brainwashed followers.

Lieders cult brainwashing with fear and hysteria is a form of mental
terrorism and she should be arrested by the authorities before thousands
of innocent and gullible people are intimidated into committing mass
    suicide.

Thousands of believers? That many? is there any way to have an accurate figure? I doubt it though

There are two differences between Nancy and Heaven's Gate that should be mentioned.

    1. Hale-Bopp was real. Applegate's followers only had to look up into the sky to see it, which at least superficially gave some weight to their beliefs. Nancy is banking everything on something that doesn't exist, and can't actually show anything to her followers. This leaves them more likely to dismiss her when push comes to shove.

    2. Heaven's Gate was a centralized cult. Everyone lived in the same house. It's much easier to influence someone in person than through correspondence. Applegate could persuade, cajole, use peer pressure, and just plain intimidate his followers, and he had 24/7 contact with them. They also didn't have access to people or resources that could have steered them away from their fate. All Nancy has is a loose network of "followers", all in various states of belief, from complete devotion to curiosity seeker. She doesn't have any direct control, nor can she keep these people from looking or going elsewhere. When things reach a head, she can't simply fire off a suicide email and expect everyone to grab their "applesauce". A handful of the most devoted might go along in that case, but I doubt it would be many. The only people I'd worry about seriously are those who actually are in direct contact with her.

In spite of the parallels, I really don't believe they are on the same path. I can't put my finger on it exactly, other than what I've already written, but they just don't feel the same.

I never believed that Nancy's is in any way a suicide cult. She has consistently maintained that people had to learn to survive the pole shift, and the "aftertimes" before they would be brought to fourth density.....she has never advocated killing yourself (pets are a different matter....) as a means of avoiding or somehow meeting PX....

Well, Nancy has to be a bit more carefull, she's wages her campaign in public. She has hinted around, more than once, about taking small children to "puppy lake." And tell me, what exactly does she mean by going to the "fourth density?" That sounds rather suspicious to me.

The control factor is an essential ingredient in the creation of any cult. The leaders enjoy the control and the power they possess over others. Over time, after they’ve exhausted their curiosity with trivial power trips, and found that followers still obey, they tend to move on to more profound things. At least that’s the trend among other “doomsday cults.”

Above all, I don't believe the Zetas to be a suicide cult, but only because they're so public. If they were more isolated, this would have Heaven's Gate II written all over it.

I'd agree that Nancy seems to have quite a few statements that could be interpretted as suicidal. In this electronic age, perhaps an email is all someone needs before taking their own life. But I doubt it, afterall, how many of them ran to their shelters on the 15th like they were supposed to?

Also, my biggest problem with this article is that it doesn't hold to standards that one might expect from an article. There are no citations or references for any statements made in the article. Is the author an authority on cults? If so, where are his/her credentials and how can they be verified? Also, the article begins with what appears to be an informative format, then quickly becomes persuasive/argumentative by expressing opinions rather than facts. There is also a slippery slope approach, painting the comparison as black and white when, as David Hall pointed out, there are many shades of gray.

I think it would be pretty interesting to do a comparison of Nancy to Applewhite, but I'd rather it be done in a more objective manner so that we could actually see true facts and parallels between the two instead of an opinionated article.

    Just my two cents

I think David got the point right the first time... It does feel different - and the reason is that Heaven's Gate took a real event and blew it out of proportion... pX is pure hooey blown out of proportion...

We have seen scant evidence of people actually going through with actions this time (I can only cite the woman who bought the shelter off one of our poster's father) - the most vocal, mainstream followers did not run off to their 'safe places' when the time drew nigh - and I think most will be hard pressed to perform any drastic action considering they would not even go through with this 'trivial' (relative term) action of 'bunkering up.'

Mr Hall is right - Nancy's influence is far less than she would like to believe.

    The tyranny of distance lives.

There are some sad tales in this Godlike Productions thread, if they can be believed.

    Just keep at it..
We shall not rest until the only ones left indoors, chatting away at forums, are us.
Then, when that happens, we will leave out computers and go forth into the light of day, and I will put the chairs up, close and lock the Internet after me.
