    Bad Stereotype on TBS Commercial

As I was walking past the TV this morning, a TBS (Turner Broadcasting) promo for one of the Jurassic Park movies was on. It showed a dinosaur chasing some people with the voiceover...

    "Dinosaurs are cool, scientists aren't."

    Thanks alot TBS.

With a pervasive attitude like that, I'm thinking of moving all my retirement investments to overseas companies.

Well, I have to admit I enjoyed seeing the lawyer getting chomped in that movie. And the scene where the T-Rex is chasing the vehicle and you see it in the mirror with the text, "Objects in the mirror are closer than they apprear." That was good.

Odds are, most scientists aren't really cool (in the commonly accepted use of the term) but a lot of the things they do are.

I think in the definition of cool (the one that doesn't deal with temperature) there is a section about the correlation that coolness increases as knowledge of scientific anything decreases, and vise versa.

I am a scientist, and no one has ever called me "cool", except during thermostat battles with my wife. But there are cool scientists - here is some of what you get when you google "cool scientists"
Extreme Scientists - anything extreme has to be cool
    Cool Mars Rover scientists
    PBS's cool scientists

When I saw JP, there was actually cheering in the theater when the lawyer got eaten. I'm not necessarily a big fan of lawyers, but I though cheering was a little over-the-top.

That was funny. It was wrong (those mirrors don't generally get put on the driver's side), but it was funny.

the passanger side mirror is slightly concave for easier viewing and thats why it bears that warning. The drivers side is, well, right next to the driver and is flat.
On backwards British cars ( and australian) it is reversed.

"Visa" is usually pronounced "Vee-za" or "Vee-sa" (depending on whether you mean the travel document or the credit card). What you're looking for is "Vai-sa," with a long "i" like in the word "I."

The correct spelling is "vice versa."

I'm not so sure on that spelling, i think Neverfly was right. But I'll wait for Gillian to jump in.

On a side note, I love how the smallest things in my posts end up hijacking most of the threads I post on. I don't do it on purpose, I swear!

    Dictionary.com says I'm right.

I thought the scene was jarring a little. When the T-Rex blew the walls of the outhouse down, the audience cracked up. The laugh died awkwardly when the lawyer got et a half-moment later. IMO, the director should have given the audience another second or two to get past the slapstick first before throwing a fatality at them. Maybe draw on the cliche' of getting the T-Rex to roar or grumble once before striking. It wouldn't have taken anything away from the scene. It was already hokey.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Goldblum/Ian Whassisface in the passenger's seat that was looking in horror at how close the T-Rex was in the "closer than appears" mirror. Neill/Grant was too busy concentrating on the road to look back.

Grant wasn't driving. Muldoon was driving - the park ranger type dude who eventually got killed by the velociraptors ("Clever girl.") And it was Muldoon who glanced at his side-view mirror (not "back") and saw the T-Rex reflected behind the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" text.

Ian was sitting in the back of the jeep - facing towards the pursuing T-Rex and saying, "Go faster. Must go faster."

Here's a website that has a screen-grab from the movie. You can't see whether it's a British- or American-style vehicle in that picture, but you can see it's the left-hand side mirror.

I'm quite certain of this one.

Huh. I stand corrected. The screenshot confirms your scenario. Cool.

    It's "vice versa."

I'm uncomfortable in any situation where the taking of a human life (or, in this case, the illusion thereof) is cause for cheering. For one, I'm not really okay with the demonizing of an entire profession (you know, leaving out "torturer," where the object is to cause pain). I've got a good friend from college who's now a lawyer, and my own disability lawyer is a pretty good guy.

I have to agree. I cringe whenever I see the depiction of death in a movie/show. It never use to phase me, but it's either since I've gotten older or since being around death as much as we were in law enforcement, but even if it's a bad guy, I don't particularly like seeing him killed on screen. Not as bad in your typical media-ized version of the old western shootouts (ouch! i got hit in the chest! let me fall instantly to the ground, dead!) but when they start maiming and decapitating people on screen, it's a little much. The true masters did it best; the killing was done off screen, left to your imagination, but not in a cheesey "lets cut away at the last second" sorta way.

Edit: lol I guess for you astute readers I should add that, for whatever reason, violence in video games isn't as much of a bother to me (see off-topic babbling: violence in video games thread). But I'm still not a fan of ultra-gorey, a-la mortal kombat. even GTA, very violent game, doesn't have a ton of blood and guts. Oh well, i'm a hipocryte, but I'm okay with that

While we're at it, that would be "faze". My attitude to death hasn't changed, but ever since 9/11/01 I don't find large explosions entertaining. Amazing how that hasn't occurred to anyone in the industry. I forget which football (U.S.) network it is that introduced every commercial break with a blast of flame. To emphasize that football (U.S.) is violent?

As long as we're on the subject of uncool scientists.

Another unsettling thing the NFL did was start using air raid sirens as part of the soundtrack to some of their promos. All that did was make this child of the 1950s kill the sound before I would get to the point of instinctively "ducking and covering".

Re "cool" and scientists, it varies from generation to generation, but a large component of "cool" as displayed by a large portion of the "cool" crowd consists of being dumb and arrogant, with an overriding concern for appearances.

Alex, I'll take "Scientists" for a thousand. And vice versa.

Yeah i stand corrected. I was taught that its Visa Versa and that people pronouncing Vise were mistaken.
I did a quick lookup and found out that its the other way around- my teacher must have gotten reversed that day.
Heres one more stab against ignorance Ty for correcting my correction

Well, now hold on a second. People pronouncing it as a single syllable, like the regular English word "vice" (or "vise") are incorrect. It is two syllables, something like "vise-uh."

But the correct spelling is "vice."
