Nominations for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Comedy in Cinema

    The Rules:

    1. Must have been a commercially released film.
    2. The work must propose an alteration of reality or a projection into the future; sci-fi/fantasy/woo-woo are all acceptable.
    3. It must intentionally be comedy, spoof or satire.
    4. Series counts as a single nomination.

Princess Bride and Galaxy Quest spring to mind.

Dr. Strangelove. It is borderline sci-fi with the doomsday device. Definitely on the speculative side.

    I liked all of those.

Okay, I can think of a lot of these. Here's some of the better ones (in my opinion, of course):

    The President's Analyst

    Sleeper

    Real Genius

    Young Frankenstein

    Monty Python's Holy Grail

    Adventures of Baron Munchausen

    Weird Science

    Shrek

    The Incredibles

    Defending Your Life

    Ghostbusters

    Edited to add:

    Back to the Future

Unfortunately removing Free Enterprise. Unless the version of Shatner in that movie counts as alternate reality.

    Gillianren read my mind...

For its clever (and I think unsurpassed) spoofs of sci-fi cliches, I say "Galaxy Quest" ftw!

Not as good as Airplane!, though. But A2 is sci-fi, A! isn't.

This is the list so far. I added Shaun of the Dead. That makes 43 movies. I wouldn't mind a few more before I start polling.

How many more do you want? I can think of other movies that fit the category, but I don't expect them to get many votes. For instance:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (movie, not series)

    Coneheads

    Dracula: Dead and Loving It

    Killer Klowns from Outer Space

    My Science Project

    Space Truckers

By the way, there is an Evil Dead I and II, the third movie in the series is (usually) called Army of Darkness.

I say there is an invisible elf in my backyard. How do you prove that I am wrong?

Evil Dead is considered to be a serious movie. IMDb comments indicate that ED 2 and 3 have a decidedly comical aspect that I'll put them on the list. I will title ED3 aas Army of Darkness. Otherwise, I was kind of hoping for good comedies that had been previously overlooked.

Buffy. . .I'll put on. When the movie first came out, I thought it was a spoofy kind of movie. It is far less serious than the series though maybe not as good. My Science Project. . .actually was a pretty funny movie, though it was really out there. That will also go on the list. No guarantees either will make the cut for the second round, of course.

The rest I will treat as. . .blechh. . .unless someone else chimes in.

Nitpick: The correct title (at least, in the US) was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Army of Darkness was very much a comedy. Evil Dead II, in my opinion, had humorous aspects but wasn't what I would think of as a comedy. Evil Dead, I'd agree, not so funny. As for more "good comedies" - many of the ones on the list already are more in the nature of cult comedies.

I just realized I've seen all of the movies on the list, except I didn't watch Young Einstein and Big Bus all the way through. Ach! My poor, poor brain!

There are a few I haven't seen, though I'm not sure I'd consider myself as having "missed" several of them.
