    For the people worrying today...

I grabbed this off of sci.astro. It's by sts060 - who I believe is a regular here - writing to someone on sci.astro named "Blake" who was telling about how worried he is about all this. This is just a great piece to read - summing up all of this, and really puts it into perspective.

    (Thanks sts060! Bravo!)

"you don't need to be a professional scientist to see through this
thing. Just apply the "smell test".

On the pro side, you have an individual with no scientific background,
who claims she has a brain implant which allows her to channel aliens,
but the aliens sound just like her, except they talk in the third
person. She moved halfway across the country after the aliens gave
her a sign. Which was finding an unwrapped Starburst candy in a box
    at the movies.

She runs a web site and has some followers who believe her. According
to her, NASA, the CIA, the NSA, the White House, the U.S. and (for
some reason) Indonesian militaries, various foreign governments, and
every professional and amateur astronomer in the world are engaged in
a vigorous and ruthless campaign to suppress the truth - which the
aliens have seen fit only to reveal through her. According to her,
the government is preparing to bomb bridges and kill civilians by the
thousands. But somehow this almighty government is incapable of
    arranging her silence.

She recently said "I am Joan of Arc and Mother Theresa, in essence".
She also called someone who offered her video imagery of the supposed
location of "Planet X" which showed nothing, a "worthless piece of
s**t" and wished him to drown in the upcoming cataclysm.

The Homeland Security department, along with various state and local
agencies, recently ran a counterterrorism drill with simulated
radiological and biological attacks. But this of course was actually
preparation to control the population when PX suddenly appears, not
anything to do with terrorism - according to Ms. Lieder.

She also claimed for some time that Comet Hale-Bopp, easily visible in
the night sky to anyone who looked, did not exist. She later revised
her story to say that NASA had suddenly "found" a comet at its
location, well after everyone else had seen it.

She has made many contradictory and incorrect predictions both as her
self and as the channeler for her alleged alien pals, yet somehow the
"Zetas" are always 100% correct - according to her.

On the con side, there are many people who have pointed out that
everything about her alleged "Planet X" is physically impossible; that
many or most of her predictions have been factually incorrect; that
she has often blatantly contradicted herself; that she understands
nothing about astronomy, the astronomical community, the way NASA and
its projects are run, and so on. There are three ways these critics
    are answered:
    1. "Zeta" science is so far advanced you humans can't understand it.
    2. You are a disinformation agent on the government payroll. (Hey,
    where's *my* paycheck?)
    3. <sound of crickets chirping>

OK, Blake, so how plausible does the whole "Planet X" thing sound now?
Are you still anxious about it? If so, what specific points are you
    worried about?"

    LET ME ASK THIS

OK I AM STILL A BIT NERVOUS ABOUT THE WHOLE PX IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS THE DAYS GO ON AND I SEE NOTHING WRONG I WILL CONTINUE TO FEEL BETTER.PEOPLE HAVE SAID TO ME JUST LOOK UP AT THE SKY AND U WILL SEE NOTHING I AM SO BAD I AT SCIENCE I WOULD HAVE TROUBLE FINDING THE SKY LOL
MY QUESTION IS COULD THERE BE A PLANET X AND ITS APPROACH IS NOT 2003 BUT 2004 OR WHENEVER AND IF DOES PASS US DOES IT HAVE TO CAUSE ALL THE DAMAGE A NANCY LIEDER AND MARK HAZELWOOD SAY.

If you feel you're bad at science, and want to understand the real threats our planet faces from natural disaster... I advise trying to take some science classes. I don't know your age or location, but even local community colleges in the U.S. have reasonable science classes. That way you can actually get a handle on the facts yourself instead of having someone else spoon feed it to you.

Not according to real astronomers. According to Phil we should have seen a 4x earth size object months ago when it was many hundred of millions of miles away. You are infinitely more likely to die from getting run over, disease, getting hit by lightning, getting bit by a snake, falling down and breaking your neck... all simultaneously... than having a planet come by and destroy the earth. There's even more chance of getting hit by a small random meteorite than the Zeta scenario. How many people do you know who have been killed from meteorites? There's always a chance SOMETHING is going to kill you. The important thing is to take reasonable precautions while living a good life. Quitting your job, moving to some so called safe spot, worrying about PX... these are all examples of NOT-reasonable precautions. There's no chance anything remotely like Nancy describes is anywhere near us. And if in some future date, responsible Astronomers (pros like Phil and hundreds of amatures) do find something heading towards earth to destroy us; we will all have to deal with that at that time. That time is not now.

And just to go back and beat the dead horse a little more...

Suppose your grandmother, a nice lady who has always taken good care of you, suddenly starts acting strange. She starts speaking of "signs." She says aliens have replaced part of her brain.

What would be your reaction? Call a doctor? Ask other family and friends if she's been saying the same things to them? Believe her unquestioningly?

Now it goes further: Grandpa has moved out, because he just can't take her ramblings anymore. Grandmother is starting to say that the aliens have told her that the Earth will end soon. Whenever you're out driving with her, she keeps eyeing people in other cars and calling them "agents."

What's your reaction now? It doesn't sound like Alzheimer’s, from what little you know about it. Could it be some sort of senility? Or is she really in contact with aliens?

It’s getting worse: On your next visit, you notice that Grandmother’s dog isn’t around. You ask her where Spot went. Grandmother replies that she’s had Spot put to sleep. Was he sick? No, but she didn’t want him to suffer after the cataclysm.

How do you respond? Shock? Take Grandmother to the hospital for an involuntary 72 hour commitment? Or do you start digging a trench in the back yard, as the aliens told Grandmother that’s the only way to survive?

Please, those of you still worrying: remember to “consider the source.” This is an old lady who has a serious mental condition (I would say “kindly old lady,” but she seems to be pretty mean.)

And she’s not the only one. Take a look around the internet. You’ll find a number of people who are quite convinced that they’re in contact with aliens, or that the government is using a microwave weapon against them, or that various and sundry “Federal agents” are persecuting them for some unknown reason (try http://www.crank.net for a good set of pointers.) While all this nefarious government activity might explain why they haven’t fixed the pothole down the street yet, I’m inclined to believe the more mundane explanation that this is a huge bureaucracy, and things sometimes fall through the cracks (or potholes.)

Oh, and one more reminder, very off-topic: Movies are not real. They are made-up stories. They do not contain secret messages. “Close Encounters” was not created to “prepare us” for anything, except maybe “Close Encounters: The Special Edition.”

Zapp: I LOVE your humour. I printed a copy so I could keep myself in chuckles over this whole thing, (which used to keep me in tears; well, not exactly). This whole board has been a good dose of sanity for me and evidently lots of others. Keep posting Zapp, and all of you other good people!

    dramaking,

please read the explanations on this web site as to why Planet X in any of the varieties offered by Ms. Lieder, Mr. Hazlewood, Mr. McCanney, etc. is completely impossible.

Also, buy or borrow a copy of The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan and read it, with special attention to "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection".

You need to arm yourself with a few facts and some critical-thinking skills, or you will always be at the mercy of the next crank, crackpot, loon, con man, or cult leader to come down the pike. You don't want that.

If you have any specific questions about "Planet X", ask away - there's a good amount of knowledge among the regulars here. But search Phil's Planet X pages on this site first, and check the postings in this forum - the question has likely already been answered...
