"Rooftop burglaries aren't uncommon, but to have somebody stuck or die is,"
Sure, but they go on to mention cutting holes in the roof is common. How common is getting stuck by using some kind of existing shaft.

I guess it depends on the relativity of the word "common". If they mean number of occurances per number of attempts, then it's probably fairly uncommon. But if you follow "dumb criminal" news, you see a few of these a year, so it's not unheard of.

In our neck of the woods yesterday…

A local thug walked into a moving company office where more than a dozen movers were preparing to head out for the day. He pointed his gun at one workers head and demanded everyone empty their pockets. The pointer turned his head for a second and the pointee grabbed the gun. Then the other movers piled on. In the end the thug ended up with a broken arm and a gun shot to the other.

Instead of a moving company couldn’t he have chosen an office full of women?

I was thinking, "if he got away with it, would it have mattered."

Decades ago, I was a mover in the summers. I still have some contacts, and I know for a fact that they don't have much money in thier pockets.

Then he would have turned his head in many directions, forgotten what he was holding, stared about a foot lower than where the face is- all up until recieving a high heel smacked against his temple.

    He made the right choice.

42 years for defendant who faked heart attack in court

Another self-lawyer with a fool for a client.

I was expecting one of those "Elizabeth, I commin to join ya" type of performances, although maybe a bit more subtle and realistic.

But; was pleased to see that the case went on, and continued right through the closing arguments with him slumped in his chair. The lawyer asked if there was anything to add, and of course, he didn't because he was faking being passed out.

Well here's one my father told me.

Him and his partner were cruising the cheap end of hotel row at 2 AM, (that looks bad if you don't know he was a policeman), as this is what you do if you are a good cop and sure enough, in one of those one story inexpensive motels there was this man, standing on the curb, whistling with his hands in his pockets and looking every which way but at them. Even when they rolled up on him, he wouldn't look them them!

My Dad's partner, who was sitting on the passeger side, (America, so right hand side, on the right hand side of the street) rolled down the window and asked, "What the <bleep> are you looking at? Butterflies?" To which the guy replied, "Well, THAT'S a fine way for an officer of the law to talk!" and while my Dad and his partner were processing this reply the man lost his nerve and ran.

So my Dad' partner jumps out and runs after him and my father draws his sidearm and walks up to the hotel door he was standing in front of, as you don't know what kind of hinkyness may be going down. Just as my father reachs out to knock on the door with his free hand the door opens and there is this guy. He can't see my father because he is holding a tv set with a fur coat draped over the top. (Hmmm, kinda suspicious )

The guy keeps trying to foist the load over to my father saying, "Here! C'mon take it!"

When my father doesn't, he finally stoops low enough to see over the pile and spies my father, gun pointed at him.

At which time he screams so loud and throws his hands up that he startled my Dad who nearly shot him accidently by making him jump. Then the tv hit the ground. Anywho these two turned out to have no ID, funny that. But one had a hotel key in his pocket.

The hotel room in question has so full of luggage, (full) tv's and coats that their was only a narrow passage to walk through to the bed, bathroom, and kitchen. Everywhere was full floor to ceiling with swag. The hotel was thouroughly investigated and determined not to be overly in on it. Just a few maids bribed to not go in there. Not the only time it happens in some hotels.

I believe they drew lengthy sentences. Near on twenty years if I recall correctly. I remember the newpapers at the tiome talking about the effort to return all that stolen property. You would think at some point they would have started fencing the stuff. I wonder what they were waiting on. Probably just that "one more time" thing.

I recall hearing about a criminal who tried to rob an ATM by chaining it to the bumper bar of his car. As he backed out his bumper bar fell off. The individual fled leaving his number plate at the scene. Police had no trouble tracking him down.

Ooh, that reminds of a story where somebody discovered that the pay-at-the-pump gas station readers would read the magnetic strip on their driver's license and actually allow them to pump gas, even though there was no account to charge.

A number of people took advantage of this, apparently not realizing that the information encoded on that magnetic strip - which the pump was reading and recording - was their driver's license number.

We had that here in Maryland about a year ago--several were caught.

Around here, thanks to Jearl Walker it's not that unheard of.
Not only was it a staple in his course, it was also aired plenty of times on "Kinetic Karnival" on our PBS station. (one of many wacky things he did)

Fleeing Suspect Falls To Death Off SF Cliff

The suspect then jumped over a wall that stands atop a hill to the west of Sansome Street. The suspect fell about 200 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene, Gittens said.
His identity wasn't released, and I really don't care about that.

The cops said he apparently didn't know the wall was over cliff. Why not? Exactly what did the cops hear as he went over?

i posted part of this elsewhere, but here's a real life series of dumb criminal emails we recently received and forwarded to the FTC. We were sent an unsolicited check for something we were trying to sell on Craig's list, the sender said that he accidently had the check made out for too much and would we please return the difference along with the items he purchased. This is an old scam.

I especially like the "Internet Act of 1962"

    -------------

I spoke today with D from the FTC and she asked that I forward all relevant emails to this address, with the above reference number as the Subject. Please contact me with any questions or if I may be of any additional help. My number is 512-XXX-XXXX. I have, at Di's request, spoken with the Chevy Chase Bank Security Department and provided them with the check, routing, and account numbers for the fraudulent check. If you need a copy of the check or the UPS Express Envelope the check was shipped in, please let me know.

Below are all emails I received, starting with the oldest first. I especially like the last one, accusing me of "engaging in the internet fraudulent transaction" because I haven't cashed the check and sent him the money, and ordering me to appear in the "cour of law".

Those committing fraud would likely get away with even more if they knew how to spell and compose even nominally grammatically correct sentences.

    Regards,
    J

Just for curiosities sake Janet and I took a "Citizen's Police Academy" course with the City of Austin. One of the officers made the point that there are not too many bad guys carrying Mensa cards. Probably not that many carrying "I've actually got an IQ that breaks 99" cards either. An IQ of 100 isn't all that bright and half the people out there aren't even that smart.

Oh, what I came here for.

The other day I saw this fine speciman of humanity get "treated like a king" by the local PD. That would be Rodney King for those that need to be told. Drunk off his butt, sitting in an outdoor chair at the local Starbucks when this pair of SSFPD's finest give him a nudge and asked to see some ID and weeniebrain does the classic "fake reaching for your wallet and come out swinging" trick.

Hey, it even worked, he laid out one of the cops flat with the first punch, but what did it gain him? A tag team butt whupping by a half a dozen cops that's what. He resisted arrest until he was unconsious, with no little smarmy quotation marks around resisting arrest either.

It was very apparent he was fit, trained in boxing and really didn't want to go to jail. AND! AND! Turns out this cheeseball was on the lame for 2 counts of forcible rape and forcible rape of a minor! Some people just have to be in a cage, I tell you true. I'm guessing it wasn't alcohol he was wasted on but heroin. Junkies just hate going to jail.

Fleeing cops? Don't give them your ID first

Police say a man handed over his license and registration at a sobriety checkpoint during the weekend, then peeled out and sped away, almost hitting an officer.

    Here's two dumb criminals

While I worked at a refrinery in California, an other employer told me of two dumb criminals he had seen in person. I include the first story because he was the employee robbed, even though it's similar to other stories, here.

He was working at a service station in El Segundo, when a car pulls in, and orders a dollar's worth of gas. The driver gave him a twenty. Driver also followed him to the cash drawer. Upon which, the driver produced a gun and held him up. So, the driver got all the money in the till, and a dollar's worth of gas, and the employee kept the twenty.

Locaonically, the man telling me this, said, "So, there was five dollars in the till, he got a dollar's worth of gas, and was caught two blocks away. He lost $14 on the robbery and went to jail."

While sitting in his operator's room at the LPG rack, my friend then proceeded to tell me about when he worked in a hotel in Las Vegas. There was a National Law Eforcement convention at two hotels. He worked at one. The hotels shared a mall with lots of bars and restruants. At 2AM, when all the bars close and let out, a man comes into the lobby of one of the two hotels, and goes to the desk. Just as cops are swarming back into the hotel from the bars, he proceeds to try to rob the desk clerk.
My man said he walked by the hotel office later, and saw the robber sitting there, surrounded by cops, and definitely in shock.

Now, I'll go back to page 4 of this thread, and continue reading stories which have no links. I heard these stories in 1969.

Well, here's an example of why you should always use the right tools for the job.

police say the suspect used the skid loader to drop the 3,000-pound machine straight down a 50-foot wooded embankment.

But things didn't go as planned. When the skid loader dropped down the hill, the man went with it.
...I guess you could probably use a skid-loader to open an ATM machine ... but the 50 foot wooded embankment probably wasn't necessary, and certianly wasn't utilized propperly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; as a cop one of the best things is when a suspect apprehends himself. Makes your job all that much easier.

The most amazing part of that story is that Kansas has a 50 foot wooded embankment.

And I thought it was just a flat stretch of corn.
