    Top ten girl geeks

    Top ten girl geeks

Can we dump Paris Hilton (please!) and add Sally Ride?

Hilton's not a geek, she's just an idiot. Big difference...in fact, I thought intelligence was required to qualify as a geek. Oh well, they just wanted to throw a name on there the "average" person would recognize so it would make for a better article.

Paris Hilton??? Ew. Ew. Ew! No, she's nowhere near smart enough to be a geek.

If they have to add cheesecake to the list, they should add Stevie "Killcreek" Case, or (much) more to my preference, Kari Byron of Mythbusters.

Definitely replace her with Hedy Lamarr for her invention of a radio guiding system for torpedoes which was used in WWII and I believe phase shifting radar/communications which'll be coming to a cell phone near you.

    More nominations:

Rosalind Franklin - did the critical work in crystallography that allowed Watson and Crick to identify the structure of DNA.

Lise Meitner - her work with Uranium identified nuclear fission and suggested that a nuclear weapon was possible.

Both were fully geeky (for their time) and neither received appropriate recognition for her work. Some say Watson and Crick baldly ripped off Franklin's work, and Meitner lived in the shadow of her male colleagues.

Or the singer Poe (mixes her albums on a home computer rather than in a studio), or even Gwen Stefani from No Doubt (said repeatedly that there is no way a group of geeks like them should have made it in the music world). The fact that Paris Hilton plays video games and carries a Blackberry she can't secure doesn't make her a Geek. Actually securing it might. Also it says she's in one of the most downloaded videos in the Internet. Ummm yeah, that was a smart move on her part.

The thing raises three big questions: What is a "geek"?
What qualities does a person need to be among the "top"?
From what pool of candidates did the writer draw his selections?

I vote for the Hot Dog Girl from the Pepsi commercial a few years back....I wonder if she's single?

Francesca Tosti is her name in case anyone's wondering.

Which is why she's on their list.

Can I point out that they mean that Grace Hopper's influence cannot be overestimated? It's Paris Hilton's that cannot be underestimated.

If you want music in, Paris Hilton has no place anyway, so please replace with Delia Derbyshire!!!

She pioneered soundcrafting and electronic music in the pre-synthesizer days at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. She recorded Ron Grainer's composition of the Dr Who theme on an extremely manual way, and gave her own twist to the composition. So much that Grainer wanted to add her as co-composer. The incredible bassline is composed by Grainer though. I still think it's one of the best pieces of electronic music, especially the sounds.

Paris fits better with the original sideshow definition of "geek".

The absolute dumbest sounding woman I met on the bus turned out to be the only woman on the bus being a scientist . I don't think that happens too often.

Any list limited to 10 people is bound to be little more than worthless. There are a lot of women who deserve to be recognized. The earlier suggestion of Hedy Lamar was a good one. She is credited with being the co-inventor of spread-spectrum communications with her wire guided torpedo idea. Then there's the ENIAC programmers. Those women were hard-core programmers of the first order. Grace Hopper was an excellent inclusion on the list, as was Lady Ada Lovelace. Some of the others, I'm not so sure about. Lisa Simpson and Paris Hilton? Come on, let's stick to real people.

    That's "Hedley"!

Hedley Lamarr: Repeat after me: I...
    Men: I...
    Hedley Lamarr: ...your name...
    Men: ...your name...
    Hedley Lamarr: [to himself] *******.
    [aloud]
Hedley Lamarr: ... do pledge allegiance...
    Men: ...do pledge allegiance...
    Hedley Lamarr: ...to Hedley Lamarr...
    Men: ...to Hedy Lamarr...
    Hedley Lamarr: That's *Hedley*.
    Men: That's Hedley.

I'd like to replace Paris Hilton with Sophie Germain.
If there was room, I'd give an honarary mention to my graduate research advisor.

Hey, what about Carol Vorderman? She's a bit of a maths whiz (particularly in terms of mental arithmetic). Famous in the UK for doing fiddly number puzzles in her head in less than 30 seconds.

    She has a Wiki entry:

    I'll third Kari from Mythbusters

Unfortunately she's a) got as boyfriend and b) is a vegetarian. Off TV, I'd go for Pauley Perrette (Abby off NCIS.) She has a real life Crimonology Masters, so she can really do what she plays on TV, how geeky is that??? lol. Apparently though, real labs are rather jealous of the equipment that they guys on NCIS and CSI get to play with and would actually love the budgets to have that sort of stuff themselves. eta (and if being in Blade Runner counts for Darryl Hannah and playing Video Games counts for PH, well Pauley was in Blade Runner the Video Game, as Lucy Devlin)
