    Celebrities Spaced Out on Space

On celebrity Jeopardy today with Carson Kressley, Nancy Grace, and Regis Philbin, one clue was "second planet from the sun" or something like that. One of them, Nancy Grace I think, guessed Mars. The others didn't ring in. Isn't this grade school material?

I look forward to the next few shows. They could be very entertaining.

No one claimed you have to be intelligent to be a celebrity. Just look at Jessica Simpson.

It is, but just go around asking anyone in the general population basic questions about the solar system. It's worse than geography. Most people do not know this stuff.

Actually, I get a laugh in regular Jeopardy when a science topic is on the board. Here will be three people that answer esotoric questions (or technically, provide questions for the clues) that I couldn't possibly touch, but in most cases they will leave the science topic to dead last. When they do get to it, the questions are usually obvious to me, but not to these otherwise amazingly knowledgeable people.

I say there is an invisible elf in my backyard. How do you prove that I am wrong?

My favorite Celebrity Jeopardy! (yes, the exclamation mark's part of the title) moment is when they had Wolf Blitzer, Arianna Huffington, and Oliver Stone. Wolf Blitzer looked really embarrassed by Oliver Stone, though Arianna Huffington held her own pretty well. Oliver Stone would have, under ordinary circumstances, have been kicked out after the first round--he was at negative dollars--but it's the celebrity version, so they're nicer. And then he was the only one to get one of the extra-special dumbed-down Celebrity Jeopardy! questions in the final round, and he won. I'm pretty sure Wolf Blitzer was resisting the urge to hit him.

Well most of the Jeopardy clues are wriiten so there are two ways of finding the answer. The celebrity matches are just suppose to be fun, and for charity but the celebrity that surprised me was Ceech Marin, one year he did better then all the celebrities that year.

I remember an episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, It wasn't a cerlibrity show but the 500,000 dollar question was,
How far is the earth from the sun?
    The choices were,
    93,00 miles
    93,000 miles
    93,000,000 miles
    93 billion miles

The person had to use a help on that one.

In a recent show, the player burned two lifelines determining which of the following was a leap year: 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995.

The one that got me was "which typeface slants to the right"--superscript, subscript, italic, or block. Two lifelines.

On Family Feud in the fast money round the two contestants were asked to name an animal other than a fish that's at home in the water. One answered shark and the other chose lizard. Two people in the survey actually did say shark.

    On Jeopardy:

Clue: The Skate was the first submarine to surface at the north pole. The Triton was the first submarine to do this.

Contestant: What is sail under the south pole?

Interesting, the way the word 'Celebrity' is used. Admittedly I am not a local, but I have not the foggiest idea who any of these three people are.

It's kind of embarrassing to watch the celebrity version of Jeopardy. The questions are so dumbed-down I squirm when the celebs can't answer them.

Of course, most of them aren't where they are because of their brains.

I suspect that game shows such as "Jeopardy!" are a lot harder to play when you're standing on stage than they are from the comfort of your living room.

I usually fare well when playing from home (unless the category is "opera" or "royalty"), but imagine I’d do far worse under the pressure of real play.

Well that probably depends if you are comfortable in front of crowds, most of the celebrities have an advantage here they do that all day long.

Carson is the fashion guy on Queer Eye who's also a major financial wizard. Has a couple of Master's degrees, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know who Nancy Grace is off the top of my head.

Nancy Grace is a grating, annoying CNN talk-show host who focuses on murder cases...cruiseship murders...blah blah...murder of the week...splashy court cases...ad nauseam.

Coolest use of a lifeline I've heard of in one of those shows was a "call anyone you know for help" lifeline.

He waited until he got to the final question, then used the lifeline to call his dad to say "Guess what? I just won 500,000." before answering the question.

But there's still a big difference between being in front of a crowd delivering a script or a roughly guided performance where you are the focus and the driver of the show and being in front of a crowd and having to answer factual questions under pressure.

So true. I have been in all sorts of "in front of" situations including acting, performance, class leadership, leading meetings, speeches, and so on.
    Here's my take on it:
In acting, there are no surprises, you have gone over the performance over and over. Facing the crowd is just an added factor in something you have done over and over again. Plus, you're not even using your own words, so theres not much to worry about.
Speeches are a little worse. You add the worry about what you are saying makes sense.
Non-interactive instruction is next. Not only is what you have to say make sense, but your audience has to understand it.
Last is the question/answer type of instruction or leading. No matter how much preperation you have done, you still need to know your subject.
