Thank goodness they haven't been able to build an ICBM, and I'm not sure if the USA is ready to fight a war on 3 fronts ?

I have a question regarding this... Does anyone have a good link to an explanation of how an underground test facility works? I've always been curious how you can set off a nuclear chain reaction (in this case apparently somewhere near a city) and contain it underground.

The world just became a far more dangerous place.

heres a link from wikipedia about under ground testing, the bomb actually provides all the material for the chain reaction doing underground just contains the reaction.

Wonder what are the chances they'll blow themselves up?
    October 9, 2006
...However, the U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity such as might be expected from a nuclear test on the Korean peninsula within the past 48 hours...Analysts say North Korea probably has enough fissile material to make six to eight nuclear bombs but probably does not have the technology to devise one small enough to mount on a missile. Reuters
Oops---CNN live just announced that the USGS did record a 4.2 event!

There was also the case of North Korean soldiers flirting with danger in the "no-man's-land" section between North and South Korea - warning shots fired... just what are they up to...?

Should we also be responsible for the drifting fallout that is sure to effect neighbouring countries?

That's a weekly occurrence - though usually it goes without press coverage.

    Is it?

Funny, isn't it, that everyday occurances can seem "suspicious" when viewed in isolation

The report I read indicated they were fishing, supposedly a twice yearly occurrence. One wonders if this was perhaps related to nuclear fishin'?

This is actually good news. Better than them having a bomb and not telling anyone about it because they wanted it to be a surprise. (A la Dr Strangelove.)

Now that they have their nuclear deterrent in the open hopefully this will help stabilize the situation. They should feel more secure now and will hopefully put more effort into reforming their economy, which they have been doing at a gradual rate. With luck the people of North Korea will soon see the sort of economic growth they are now seeing in India and which the Chinese have gotten used to.

    Well put Ronald.

I will go that one step farther.

North Korea have every right to build and test there own defense system in their own country. Lets be comforted by the thought that just across their northern boarder lies China. You would not want them as a enemy would you.? I do not see this as unsettling the region.

The White House has already issued a statement.

"A North Korean nuclear test would constitute a provocative act in defiance of the will of the international community and of our call to refrain from actions that would aggravate tensions in Northeast Asia,"
They are still using the more diplomatic future tense even though the statement came after the report of the test - though before the USGS data was released.

Please be careful. While the whole thread is about something with geoploitical implications, this statement clearly violates our no politics rule. There is no warning this time, except to broadly point out that we need to avoid this kind of thing.

Russia condemns '5-15 kiloton' North Korean nuclear test
    http://www.spacewar.com/2006/061009112917.irth4ev2.html

China said on Monday it firmly opposed North Korea's nuclear test, denouncing it as "brazen" in unusually strong language, and demanded Pyongyang stop any action that could worsen the situation."The DPRK has ignored the widespread opposition of the international community and conducted a nuclear test brazenly on October 9," China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its Web site (www.fmprc.gov.cn).

The nuclear test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (01:36 GMT) in Hwaderi near Kilju city.

The Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) has 337 monitoring facilities around the globe.
As well as seismograph and infrasound networks, they have what are called radionuclide stations which would be able to detect any nuclear particles in the atmosphere.
