Hot Apples Batman! (Apple joins Dell in the battery recall)

<PRI BBC news anchor voice>BBC News</PRI BBC news anchor voice>
Computer giant Apple is recalling 1.8m batteries used in its laptop computers worldwide after overheating complaints.

The announcement affects laptop computers - the iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - sold between October 2003 and August 2006.

According to US safety officials, the batteries were made by Sony, which also supplied similar batteries to Dell.
I typed this on a HP laptop which is nicely warming my lap... I think I'm going to pop the battery out and see if there's a Sony name on it.

I'm typing this on a Macintosh laptop which if I had it directly on my laptop would pretty much guarantee I'd never have children. But fortunately (and surprisingly) it's not on the recall list.
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.

Sony faces huge money woes over battery recall

Just how much is this extensive battery recall going to end up costing Sony, who will be taking some of the brunt for Dell in this? For the more than 4 million units, Sony's looking at a very painful $200 to 300 Million according to some analysts. There's even a wild guess out there of $430 Million, but that is unsubstantiated. As mentioned earlier, many companies besides Dell will be affected by this recall, including HP, Apple and Lenovo, who all use Sony batteries.

Sony's stock has taken a hit lately due to concerns about a laptop battery recall and production problems with its new PS3 game console.

Problems with laptop batteries and PS3 delays are overshadowing the fact that Sony is having a killer year at the box office.

Next? My daughter's LenovoBM tablet was scorching when she pulled it out of its case the other day--she took it in to have it re-imaged. The batteries are made in Japan.

Did you hear Conan O'Brien's comment amount the Apple recall?

"Experts say a Mac fire is just like a PC fire, except it's more hip and condescending."
