Server will be upgraded on Tuesday, August 22

As part of the housecleaning Phil mentioned, we're upgrading the processor and RAM on the BAUT server. We've scheduled this for Tuesday, August 22. I'm not sure the time yet, but I'll let you know. It's going to be a fairly invasive process because we need to upgrade the motherboard as well. The server will be down for a few hours, probably.

The server should be much faster then, and be very capable of handling both BAUT and media darling Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy.

Hmm, so thatīs the reason of all the concerns about the date...

Yeah, we figure a nuclear war is a good time to update the server. It should be a low volume time on the server.

With all the trouble I'm having getting on the board this morning, the 22nd can't come soon enough.

And if the server isn't fast enough then, we'll kick Bad Astronomy out, and tell it to get its own server.

    Hum,
i think we can all learn a lesson on `upgrades` from the fate that befell Cyberdyne Systems Corporation.

    The BA:
The BAUT funding bill is passed. The system goes online on August 22nd, 2006. Human decisions are removed from strategic astronomy. BAUT begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14am Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

    Fraser:
    And, BAUT fights back.

    Bump, to lessen the surprise.

Hey, do we have an estimated time for loss of signal?

We can do a countdown, like we do for other exciting missions.

The upgrade got moved up, and they tried to do it today. The RAM's in the server now, but the chip wasn't working, so that's still going to happen - maybe later today or tomorrow.

I was wondering why I got a "no route to host" message a couple of hours ago.

It's good to know that what Forbin started, our administrators will complete. This should be one colossus of an upgrade.

    Enough with the BABBling already!

Phil, it might be time for Blade Server: The Series.

As long as we don't have a BAUT user named "Forbin" I think we'll be okay. I checked. So far, we don't. Edited to add: Mak, I wrote that before I read your post. Gahh!

I hope that it is just a temporary thing, not an indicator of the future, but BAUT is impressively S*L*O*W right now!

The ram upgrade happened, but not the chip. We're still waiting on that.

  24. #24
The replacement chip is in, so they're going to install it at 1:00pm CDT on Wednesday, August 24. I don't expect we'll be down for very long, though.

No, that's 7pm in the UK.

Or possibly 6:55pm if they abide by the current server time, hint, hint

Okay, the chip was just upgraded. But they still need to recompile the kernel to handle a multi-core processor. And re-jargonate the jargonator.

Make sure they reverse the polarity of the neutron flow, too.
