Universe may be bigger and older

There was an interesting article in our newspaper with a Los Angles Times byline. The headline is "Universe may be bigger, older than scientist thought" I'll quote a few paragraphs. "Using findings from an Ohio State University team of astronomers are raising the possibility that the universe is larger than previously thought. Using new measurement methods, the team found that the Triangulum Galaxy is 3 million light years away, not the 2.6 million that had been accepted in the past. If the method proves reliable on other distant objects, the results could force a readjustment of one of the building blocks of modern cosmology---the Hubble constant"

A co-authur is Krzsztof Stanek. The paper is scheduled to appear in the Astrophysical Journal. The article goes on to state "A readjusted Hubble constant would make the observable universe about 15 percent larger than some current estimates, which range from a radius of 46 billion light years to 78 billion light years, according to recent calculations " " The age of the universe also would increase from the current estimate of 13.7 billion years old to around 16 billion years old"
"Peter Eisenhard, a scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge, California, specializing in galaxy evolution called the paper a "pretty solid piece of work"

Universe may be bigger and older? It may not be either.

There is several lines of evidence that come together to provide an age estimate of the Universe at 13.7 billion years.

It will take a bit more than "solid" work to overturn this.

and what is the "new measurement method" being used anyway? Just applying it to one object (M33) does not mean that the distance to everything else is necessarily wrong.
