Why is there this big X in the middle of the nevadian desert? I was just trying to find Boundary Peak and I stumbled accross it on accident. What do you think? google earth 37 degrees 12'00.35 N 117 degrees 11'08.42 W.

It's where the treasure is buried.
Here's another interesting Google Earth find
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/23/flying_car/
Reminds me of my poster of Southern England
from space I got a few years ago. There was
a neat white circle in the corner to the
north west of London. I got a map out and
tried locating it. The shape of wooded areas
helped navigation. Then I recognised the
name of a location from a booklet on a
csr company testing station I got 25 years
prevously. Yes it was a circular banked
driving track. Really chuffed I cracked it![]()
There's an information note there (one of three) which identifies it as an airfield built about 1944.Originally Posted by space cadet

Is that really a flying car, or just a big billboard?Originally Posted by five_distinct

how'd you find that out?Originally Posted by scottmsg
Probably just a billboard or something... The page doesn't seem serious.Originally Posted by paulie jay
Okay,
That's an X in the desert and a 'flying car' explained.
What's this over north west England?

If you go to this map, there's a button to view an arial photo of the same place.
There's nothing there.

So why the blot on the (GoogleEarth) landscape?

PS Thanks for the link to the OS oldmaps site - I'll go there again!
First, the X: It's probably just a visual taget (simulated airfield) for practice for those from Tonopah, Top Gun (Fallon), or Nellis (Las Vegas). I don't see any evidence of bomb craters, so it's probably approved just for strafing runs or dry passes.
Who say's it's a car? Maybe it's a sign on two small poles, too tiny to see given the satellite's resolution?Originally Posted by five_distinct
I love the explanation:Maybe it's a car on two skinny poles, too tiny to see given the satellite's resolution!Which leaves just one possible explantion: the Aussies have developed a gravity-busting hyperdrive...
However, here's the conspiracy site: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01...r_launch_site/
And here's some possible explanations of the hoax: http://www.theregister.com/2006/01/2...g_car_letters/
So, yes, I think it's a hoax, and I think someone simply put a black tarp next to it for a while.
The real question is where are the shadows of the other cars in relation to them, and where's the real shadow of the flying car?
If you go to Google, you can see that both the other cars and the "flying car" have real shadows, and that the additional, offset shadow is not caused by the sun.
The fact that someone actually spotted this from Google is ridiculous, due to it's coverage of so much area, so it's ore likely someone did a prank and brought it to other's attention.
If I lived near a haunted house I'd buy sacks of black dirt and drop it on the back lawn in a semblance of a ghost!
Even more mysterious is that when you go to Mapquest and drill down to find out what's down there, it says, "Map data not available," while the area north of the bay there's no problem!!!
OOooohhhhh Soooo Spppooooookkyyyy!
Addendum: After reading one explanation which claimed that it was probably just a black car parked next to it, I went looking for the nearest black car and found one parked in the lot just to the NE from the mysterious "flying car." Sure enough, the shadow of the flying car and the actually black car look about the same.
Addendum Two: Here are two more "flying cars" in Perth. Funny how they seem to be just a white and black car parked next to one another...

Ok, can we quit, now, or is everyone having too much fun?
Google Earth reveals naval swastika...
CNN Video
Ok; the place has been there for 40some years among both military and civilian airports, and nobody has noticed until google earth?
More like, nobody that is familiar with seeing things from above really cares, because it's a common issue.
So now they need to spend $600,000 to mask it.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...la-home-centerDuring a discussion with military officials on other issues, Davis had mentioned the Coronado buildings and suggested that rooftop photovoltaic arrays might help change the overhead look. The base gets 3% of its power from solar energy and has been looking to increase that percentage.
it's ok if the money goes on solar panels.
Thanks; I looked for it, but couldn't find that particular one. I did notice a lot of L shaped buildings in the area which kind of reinforced the Idea that this wasn't that big of a mix-up.
But; now that I see the surrounding area... I see the two American bomber buildings heading in from the southwest about to pass over and bomb the swastika building. It lookes doomed.
You can find Area 51 on Google Earth.
