Pehaps because they can be animated....
Too many animations can get annoying...
You can easily change a gif into a JPEG using MSpaint, just open it in paint then click save as and then change the format to JPEG.

you are right i could do that, but i just like the animated version.
how do other people get animated pictures then?

I think the trick lies in keeping the file-size under 19.5 kb.
