James McCanney on Phil Plait

Forwarded from Mark Hazlewood's group which is forwarding a message from Mr. McCanney regarding Phil Plait. McCanney seems to be claiming that he did earn the title of Professor. Odd that this isn't mentioned in his bio, possibly he will tell everyone where he earned this (but I doubt it).

Apparently the lessor professor is going to "expose" Phil on his broadcast tonight. This should be amusing.

He sent me that same text via email.I'll listen to his show when it's archived. Should be amusing, in a "watching a car accident" sort of way.

On the other hand, I try to listen to Bart Sibrel's archived stuff, and after a few minutes I usually have to turn it off. We'll see how long I can listen to Mr. McCanney's stuff. I didn't get too far into his book before losing interest either.

I find it mildly ironic the way he defends his own (supposed)PhD while at the same time berating and ridiculing Phil's.

From what I've read of this guy, he looks like one of the most vitriolic conspiracy types I've ever seen. He throws insults and innuendo around like water. The good thing is, he probably alienates more people than he converts to his "causes".

Thursday I recieved an e-mail of just one line, "see jmcanney.com and you wont be so cocky" I've heard of the guy, he's a conspiracy nut. One of those types I guess that lumps everyone together as 'spooks' that openly disagree with him.

As for law suits, it's a bit of a joke! Given the way I have confronted disnformants, and nuts in general it's a line I've heard before! These people almost never sue anyone, as a plaintif in a suit they are not immune from being called to the whitness stand. Where any lawyer worth his retainer will rip them apart! And I think most of them do have the brains to figure that much out.

All in all, I have to say I more or less look at being labeled a 'spook' or 'disinformant' as a badge or honor when it comes from these people. But my favorite was when I was called an NSA opertive, man I am no way that smart!!!

I don't understand where he and others can ignore the data that is known to be true and make up thier own. I work in solar wind and plasma physics and all of his ideas to do with the solar wind and comets have no basis in anything. To make the conclusions about the sun and space environment that he has made you would have to ignore physics!

I really didn't even know there was a problem until i was using my telescope a year ago and a stranger came up to me and asked if i thought we had landed on the moon. I wasn't sure if he was kidding or not at first but i think i he knows the truth now

I have been getting spam from Robert E. McElwaine, so I am of the opinion that the anti-spam laws will have a limiting effect on stupidity as well.

I am against the censoring ideas, no matter how stupid they may be. I don't believe that would be a good idea.

For various reasons, I have had dealings with stupid people and found myself thinking about their stupidity and what they could possibly be thinking. I reached some conslusions:

1) Stupidity must be some sort of survival mechanism, otherwise the trait would be quickly wiped out. I suspect this works by intelligent people keeping the stupid from killing themselves and the intelligent getting getting caught in the blast radius when they are unable to stop them.

2) Many of the stupid try and use stupidity like Luke Skywalker uses the Force. It allows them to justify whatever conclusions they want without all that pesky science and logic getting in the way.

3) Stupidity many times gets mistaken for intelligence. There is a thin line between a subtle argument and a nonexistent argument. Many people confuse the two believing that there must be something there because nobody could possibly be so stupid otherwise.

4) Stupidity sometimes gets used as a cloaking device. It protects to stupid from scrutiny on a number of levels. Most people don't really like to deal with stupidity and will run at the first opportunity, or will deny its existence (See 3 or consider the phrase "Nobody can be that stupid!") There is also the "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, bury them in bulls**t!" angle. Notice how the stupid can drone on for hours or pages.

These people have existed all through history with sometimes horrible concequences. I just get worried sometimes, the public sometimes leaps before they look and harmless "CRAP" can become salem witch trials or Nazi germany.

And the media is not a helping factor in most cases, they are usually less informed than the general public. hahahha

welcome to the board. BTW, while I agree in general with your assessment, you might want to moderate some of the terms used, as they are leaning towards the ad hominem at times, and Dr. Phil does his best to keep the board polite.

Yes, we have some real go-arounds with people whose "investigative skills are limited to finding their TV remote under the couch cushion" (as JayUtah put it); for instance, there have been truly epic encounters with some Apollo deniers. Such exchanges are always illuminating; I for one usually learn things myself. Such is the breadth of collective expertise of BABB regulars.

BTW, firefighters have a term for stupid people: "job security".

Well, curiosity is definitely more of a survival trait than a danger. Our brains are wired to assign meaning to the world, and how well we do that has certainly been one of the driving forces in the ascension of our species. At some point in the long distant past, man started trying to plant crops. When the crops inevitably died, our ancestors didn't give up, they were able to figure out the "why," the reason it had happened, and correct it. If the reason was, "not enough water" they corrected it by watering the crops.

Our brains are designed to ask why, to develop the best hypothesis we can, and to run with it. The question is, what happens when the world is too complex for us to figure out. I think that history shows that what we do is basically make something up. We develop religion or superstition to answer the why questions, and just do the best we can. What you jokingly call stupidity, I call the result of curiosity combined with a lack of ability to understand "why." Fortunately, the world isn't too complex for us often enough to kill us.

But basically, I think there are two types of woowoos. The first type is the person who knows he's wrong, but makes something up just to get attention. It's really not hard to do. The other type of woowoo, I think, is a person with a substantial need to understand the world, but without the resources to do it. In any case where our brains are wired to do something, we wont feel comfortable unless we can do it. That's what instinct is all about. I think that the people who we call woowoos have a substantial, overbearing need to understand why things happen. But for whatever reason (maybe they just didn't pay attention in high school) they don't have the ability to understand or accept the mainstream explanations, but they absolutely have to fill that need.

Look at the bright side, that drive they have is what keeps pushing our species forward. It isn't a bad thing at all.

Well, I didn't want to insult anyone. I respect people with religious beliefs, even beliefs I don't share. I think of superstitions as being rules based on the idea of luck rather than the influence of a deity.

At any rate, some of them certainly have positive influences on societies. I like how so many religions are forbidden by god from eating pork. It just so happens that if you don't have a freezer, it's probably not a good idea to eat pork.

Of course, Hindus don't eat cow. Some Hindus eat only vegetables. And "old-time" Catholics such as Mel Gibson don't eat fish on Fridays. Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent, and Good Friday are fast days for Catholics.

Other way around, actually. Catholics traditionally don't eat meat on those days. Fish is fair game. Incidentally, the fast is still in place, although since the second Vatican council it's only been observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent.

This is the crux of the matter. Normal, intelligent people do this. The fundamentally stupid don't. We normally assume that people have some intelligence. We imagine that others have similar chains of thought that go through their minds when faced with the same problems. Unfortunately, this is horribly wrong when dealing with the stupid. They perceive things as just a random series of events with no cause and effect. They will repeat the same mistake over and over again expecting different results. And we find ourselves making up reasons to explain their behavior in terms of there being some logic behind it.

Watch the movie "Being There". Don't read interpretations into it, just think about what the people are thinking. You might see what I'm trying to convey.
