What Happened to the New Dr. Who?

In 2004, CBC in Canada ran the new Dr. Who series. The season ended with Dr. Who being morphed into a new character. However, it appears that CBC is not running the series anymore. They ran the first episode of season two just before Christmas but that was it.

Any Canucks on board know anything about this?

Actually the second series hasn't been made yet.
The Christmas special was a one-off, and not part of a series.

Thank you sir! I was worried that the CBC had, in it's infinite wisdom, decided not to air the 2nd season. I've got something to look forward to.

Future is interesting; they've only got three more regenerations left, and, if they want to maintain continuity, one of them will have to be pure evil!

I'm most impressed it was shown there in 2004, seems Canada benefited from TARDIS technology

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ for all your loverly Dr WHO nourishment while we wait impatiently for the next series

    (Edited for typo).

Do you think they will stop making Dr Who because of an ancient plot continuity point from 30 years ago? I doubt it, theres always a way.

It wasn't exactly a minor continuity point; it formed part of a story arc that lasted for an entire season. And it was nineteen years ago, but yes, that too is a long time.

Thanks for the link. It will help us get by.

I'm actually fairly new to Dr. Who. I remember watching it as a youngster back in the 60's but it disappeared from Canada until the latest reincarnation. I really enjoyed the series latest offering.

If you haven't seen the show before, you're in for a treat.

That is just next door when you have a TARDIS.

Doctor Who as a series hasn't been consistent on the number of regenerations over the years- I seem to recall another episode where the Doctor was awarded hundreds of extra regenerations (presumably thanks to forward-thinking scriptwriters). The number has varied throughout it's 43-year history, so it's a bit unfair to hold it to one figure.

The idea of a pure evil Doctor has real appeal for me ... kind of hard to see how you could make a convincing series out of it though, now that (spoiler warning for US viewers ... highlight the text to read) ...

... the rest of the Time Lords have been wiped out

Well that's easily sorted. All they have to do is have him encounter some vast infusion of pure zytonic energy from some alien power generator and he'll have as many regenerations as he needs...

and, if they want to maintain continuity, one of them will have to be pure evil!

Not strictly true. The Valeyard was an amalgamation of the darker sides of the Doctor's nature, called into existence somewhere between his twelfth and thirteenth incarnations. Interestingly, the original script had him as a fully fledged final incarnation, but the producer vetoed that and had it changed for something less definite. The result was so confusing that the publishers of the novels in the 90s actually refused to consider any submitted storyline that included the Valeyard!

A vast infusion of pure energy? From an alien power generator, you say?

That sounds remarkably like a Bad Wolf scenario.

Sci-Fi is going to start airing Doctor Who in the US next month, right after the current run of Galactica finishes.

Season two of the new series is supposed to start airing in Britain in April. Last time Canada got it at about the same time - I'm not sure what's supposed to happen this time around.

Anyway there is an evil Doctor, he is called the Master. we don't think that he won't be making an appearance at sometime in the future?

    I want the Sontarans back!

I hope the Master doesn't show up again. We've already seen him obliterated twice, and Gallifrey has been destroyed along with all the Time Lords. Having him come back again with no explanation would be really scraping the barrel.

Having the Sontarans back would be excellent, though.

I believe that the first Dr Who aired on 23/11/63. The day after, oh well you know. I still think Bill Pertwee was the best Dr.

Let's face it, the writers can come up with any plot device and rationale they want. As long as the series remains entertaining, I'll still watch.

Yes, but they're TIME LORDS - they can travel in time!

According to discussions at the convention this past weekend, there are no plans to bring back the Master. (The consensus was, "Don't bother unless you can resurrect Roger Delgado.") However, the Cybermen will be back in the second season. No word on Sontarans yet.

The Sontarans always made me laugh a bit. I mean, they were this great, all-conquering warrior race, absolutely invulnerable to physical attack, except for this one little spot on the back of their necks that was very conveniently highlighted on their armour, just in case you needed help finding it.

You are correct, and because the BBC felt that it may have been overshadowed by that event they repeated the first episode immediately before the second the following week. They were wise to do so, as the audience was higher.

I still think Bill Pertwee was the best Dr.

You mean Jon Pertwee. Bill Pertwee (his cousin) was best known for playing Hodges, the ARP warden in Dad's Army.

The official explanation is that this is so a Sontaran knows never to turn his back to an enemy.

I think we will see the Time Lords come back at some point, I mean the Doctor thought he had destroyed the Daleks. One of my fave tom Baker stories is the 'Deadly Assassin' after all.

It was a mistake to kill off the Time Lords. They were a very interesting race and only partially explored. Their role in maintaining the fabric of spacetime, their venality, their corruption, the fact that their entire society was organised along university lines, all of these were worth revisiting at some point. Now, if there are any others left (and I doubt Romana made it back from E-Space just to be killed off) they're scattered and isolated nomads, just like the Doctor.

Jason, I stand corrected, I now feel like a "stupid boy"

Who's to say that the Timelords are killed off. The important thing about Timelords is they are as you might guess by their name Lords of Time. They have rules about what they can and can't do but they don't always follow them, they have the Doctor to get round anything inconvenient.
