Hm, let's see...
Pay off student loans. Invest the rest.
Wow. I'm boring...
Very bad question for me at the moment. Due to some improbable chain of events, I learnt to know an intelligent, beautiful young woman in a dark corner of the WWW. Improbably, I fell in love to her and even more improbably, she fell in too. She is far and due also to other reasons, we both know, there will be no common future. In long talks I meanwhile learnt, that her circumstances of life are the most brutal and humiliating I have ever heard of and since her childhood she knows only hate, hurt, pain and abuse. She is ill, in body and soul and if I only had $50000, I may be able to help her to move away from the place she lives to a bigger town, get some professional medical and psychatric treatment and some nurse for her kid she loves so much and who is the only reason for her she is still alive. With the money, I could support her a few years until she has recovered, if she ever could recover. But I need a million, because she never wants to take something from me, as she knows I need my income for me and my kids. But with one million, I may be able to show her that she isn't taking something serious away from me and so she might accept. But currently, prospects are meager and I'm afraid, she might not survive this year if I can't find help for her.
Buying a small personal aircraft would be nice as well, just go tour around the world, that would be a lot of fun.
Wow, Harald, I've never heard you talk this way before. Your story sounds like Lurker's and his Persian.
That is indeed horrible Harald, sad to hear, but be careful when helping people financially, it could be a scam, but if true it is indeed a terrible thing.Originally Posted by kucharek

I wouldn't change a bit of that, but I would build a nice observatory for my 6" APO and add a fairly large RC scope with auto-guiding and imaging capabilities. I would ask local schoolchildren to compete for imaging time on the RC, get them interested in projects like monitoring galaxies for supernova, etc, and see if I could get some of them interested in becoming astronomers.
We don't need much money to live on, so I could probably invest much of the money and use the returns to help some of the little rascals go to college.
Of course, I was very careful. But I've witnessed enough to be sure it is not a scam. Gee, I would have been glad if it would have been one.Originally Posted by Dragon Star
Ok, just wanted to make sure you were reminded of the risks envolved.
I am going to assume that the million bucks is what I am left with after taxes and such.
500 grand would go right into investments, solid and not too risky, just keep compounding up the interest, and also some real estate in the Keweenaw of the U.P.. Then I would pay off all my debts, buy an RV, put my stuff into storage, grab my animals and my gal and hit the roads of the US and Canada. I think a trip of a year would be awesome.
After the trip I would get both our behinds back in school to get the degrees we really want.
Then when we are ready, we build or buy the Inn of our dreams and run that in our retirement. But, I intend on using a fair portion of the money for travel in general. I like the idea of a personal observatory quite a bit though.
It may seem I am unrealistic in just how much I think a million would go. Naw, I just know how to make money streeeetch, without being too much of a cheapskate.
What would you do if you had a million dollars?
I'll tell you what I'd do, man, two chicks at the same time, man.
That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?
Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I had a million dollars I could hook that up, cause chicks dig a dude with money.
Well, not all chicks.
Well the kind of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.
Well what about you now? what would you do?
Besides two chicks at the same time?
I'd relax, I would sit on my *** all day, I would do nothing.
Well you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Just take a look at my cousin, he's broke, don't do &#&!
Without trying to sound like a goody two shoes, i'd probably spend most of it trying to make a small difference to the lives of those in grinding poverty. I have a good job that I enjoy, a house bought and payed for,a loving family, and my health. ( plus at least 20 Guitars) In truth, what the Hell do I need anything else for.
Well, as MetricYard intimated, I think $10m would be more worthwhile. $1m really ain't that much at the end of the day, probably everyone on this forum will earn more than $1m in their working lives, just spread out quite a bit.
But, with $10m, the easy thing to do would be to plunk it in a high-interest Internet Bank Account. No Fees. No minimum or maximum balances. One of those. They tend to provide 5-6% interest per annum.
Which would mean $500,000-$600,000 interest per year to live off, safe in the knowledge that if there's any real emergency there's still an 8 figure sum backing that up in the bank.
Easy things are rarely good things with money. Don't forget income tax and inflation.Originally Posted by jkmccrann

Plus if you take all the interest as income your capital doesn't grow, and in real terms it shrinks. If inflation is at 3% for 10 years then at the end of that period your 10 mill is worth 7.5 mill at today's values and your income is worth 225K.
I'd finally have a deposit for a one bedroom cupboard.
No, you are quite correct there with your figures, have you lived down under? (or is your address in fact Dunedin, South Island?), but believe me, that's one bridge I'll cross when I get there.Originally Posted by Heid the Ba'

I don't know, I have a few years yet...............
Ģ560,000 would allow me to finish the house in Poland and clear up the money we owe on our Flat, vehicles, loans, credit cards etc.
If I was to invest in the interest of others, it would be a school that under privileged youngsters could go to to study topics they don't get at school. Stars, Fossil Hunting, Music and Foreign Languages.
I'd spend about 10% of the $1 million on things I really want. But I wouldn't buy, like, a $10,000 dollar bed or anything as silly as that. But I would buy a nice large home, decent supplies (especially for work, etc.), and a decent computer. I'd then throw 50% of the total in the bank, and save it for "a rainy day". The other 40% would also be in the bank, but that would be "spending money". Then I'd relax until my spending money got a little low. However, I'd still keep a decent job, and I wouldn't go to lavish resteraunts; I'd basically conserve what I could with the money.
In short, I'd use $1 million just to relax. Though I would also spend a decent amount of it on charities, though I'm not sure on what percentage at the moment.
That's one problem I wouldn't mind having.Originally Posted by Argos

A month ago, I finally met her for a few days. Not the slightest sign of a scam. The four days we spent together were much too little, but at least we found out that our feelings for each other stood this reality test. For someone with such a hard fate, she is an incredible sensible woman who suffers a lot, but rarely complains. How we continue is pretty open, but that we want to continue we are sure of.Originally Posted by Dragon Star
