Thread: Will BAUT forum ever die?

    Will BAUT forum ever die?

This may be the strangest question asked in this forum, but really, how long is BAUT forum going to be? 10 years? 100 years? forever?

It seems, with the number of people joining increasing (I think) every time, that there will always be something for all to talk about, unless the administerators decide to close the forums at some point(Though I dont think will happen)

You know I've always wondered about this... even more so with new horizens going to take 10 years- I wounder what BAUT will be then... the internet and the technoligy would be so different by then...

Not much long ago the admins said they were planning to establish a foundation to sponsor astronomy/education projects, iirc. Thatīs a long term endeavor. Also, with the number of users steadly increasing the forum may become a major Internet reference, with everything that goes with ($$). So I think the probability of it lasting more ten years is high. And just between us: Ten years is not much time.

    Great to hear that!

I am bored a bit right now so I will try to estimate how many posts each will have in the next 10 years.

    10 years (2006-2016) = 3653 (leap years included)

ToSeek: 14,352 posts (9.22 posts per day)
    In 10 years time = 48,033 Posts

Candy: 12,250 (18.11 posts per day)
In 10 years time = 78,406 Posts (wow!)

Nicolas: 5,370 (10.66 posts per day)
    In 10 years time = 44311 Posts

    The_ Radiation_Specialist: 433 (11.47 posts per day)
In 10 years time: 42333 Posts

    Ok, I will stop now.

Actually it seems to me to have gone just a touch flat lately. Maybe it's because there seems to be a lack of Planet X and stuff like that lately. We need another "planetary alignment" or something like it. Also, it seems a steadily increasing proportion of threads are the acronym, word-link, Jamble type of stuff.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Not to worry, with civilian space programs looking to take off in a year or so, we'll have plenty of grist for the mill. That, and China's manned program, Brazil's up and coming status, Japan maybe looking at the #4 spot for manned mission launchers.

It won't be a quiet decade waiting for Pluto.

I suspect that BAUT will not survive the sun becoming a red giant. It almost certainly will not survive the decay of protons. So I would guess sometime before the sun becomes a red giant, BAUT will end.

Oh, I don't know, Swift, surely by then we'll be on the Extranet. We'll simply move the server to Alpha Centauri (assuming it hasn't vaporized its habitable satellites) before the Earth gets engulfed. That should be good for another few billion years, right?

    Right?

    Right?
I'm not sure about the age, but Alpha Centauri A is a little more massive than the sun, so will age more quickly. Alpha Centauri B is a bit smaller, but too close to A for comfort. Tiny Proxima Centauri (Alpha Centauri C) will be around for a very long time, so may be a better choice - but the Alpha Cen system will certainly drift off quite a bit in the next few billion years.

I think I'll leave the location of the server to those who follow us. I think a bigger potential issue would be what happens if life extension techniques become practical soon. If that happens, we'll need a server the size of a planet just to handle ToSeek's and Candy's posts (this is assuming molecular scale integration, of course).

So, what do folks think BAUTers will be discussing ten years from now? A century?

In a ten years we will be discussing the newly released results from New Horizon! :surprised
A century from now.... well, the Word Association came will be require its own Cray for all the entries. I sure someone will be talking about Planet X is coming ANY MINUTE NOW! And there will be that endless debate as to whether "they" faked the first landing on Mars.

well, it says I only average 2+ posts per day.. but I also joined in 2003... since October 2005 I've been posting at a higher rate. I figure I'll take over from ToSeek by the end of 2007

Things change. The BAUT forum will be here, but I highly doubt it would be the same as it is today.

Some might get banned, some might willingly leave, some might get bored. There will always be new additions, unless this forum ends up being taken down. Things aren't linear as all that.

Some of us will be arguing with the HBers from our retirement homes in Hellas Planitia. We'll post our own photographs of the landing site.

Others will be arguing that while the commercial spacelines can go to Mars, they'll never get to Jupiter.

So many Earthlike planets will have been discovered, thanks to all the new technology in the next few years, people will be more interested in that, than a frozen rock at the edge of the solar sytem. The Pluto fly-by will be a quaint, experiance for most. "Can you believe thats how they used to explore space? Flying by a planet, really, how 20th century."

Perhaps we will have some faster ships by then and as NH goes by, BA and TooSeek can wave.

It's an interesting question. At this point, there isn't any problem of funding, thanks to Adsense. I'm assuming that decreases in costs for bandwidth and hosting should stay ahead of increases in membership. We've added almost 2000 members since we merged at the beginning of August, so maybe we'll add 4-5000 people a year to the forum. x10... that's a pretty large group of people. :-0.

It's my sincere hope that all of this brainpower and enthusiasm eventually gets organized to help with astronomy education, outreach and the support of skepticism. As Argos said, I'd love it if we could start setting up scholarships and funding for research to help pitch in. Not just yack about space and astronomy, but actually contribute our time and money to make things better.

I hope that in 10 years, we'll have been able to make a difference. And have some spirited discussions along the way.

I can see it requiring some seriously beefy parallel servers.

When I first really started posting (October-ish), I'd log on and see maybe 7 others online. now, just 3 months later, it's rare that I see fewer than 15.

Could (if they haven't already - not bothered to look) set up a store of some sort for BAUT/BA/UT trinkets - shirts, hats, Clue-by-fours...

One day, we will know everything, of everything, and run out of topics of science to discuss (or not)

Then it will die, or will it?
