This seems to be a trend here in Nova Scotia. Particularly with games like poker. High school kids are getting into poker (or so I've been hearing from co-workers) and I am wondering if this is a trend to be concerned about. VLT's (video lottery terminals) are already a major problem and have ruined many lives, (suicide, divorce, etc.).

I would say 'yes'. What with all the poker shows on TV these days, is it really any wonder?
Although I have noticed a little bit of hypocrisy about gambling. Governments tend to warn the public to gamble responsibly in the casino, but all of their lottery ads proclaim that "all your dreams could come true!!".

I know I'm specifically forbidden to buy lottery tickets--or gamble at all--with my disability money, which I think is quite reasonable.
I'd actually rather like to get up a weekly poker game, were it not for the fact that most of my friends spend their free time gaming instead. However, we wouldn't play for cash, as none of us can afford it. We'd play the way my sister and her friends did in junior high--using the contents of someone's penny jar, all pennies returning to whoever owned the jar. However, very few gamblers, I suspect, are as sensible on the subject as to just play for the fun of playing the game. Apparently, to some people, the risk makes it fun.

I blame ESPN. They needed something to fill the eternity of dead airtime they were wasting with talking heads rambling on about the big four sports in the US, and it snowballed from there.

Actually I blame the Catholic Church (oops I'm biting the hand that feeds me) they were faster than the Indian reservations at seeing the potential of gambling. Back in the good old days when churches abound in the inner city, bingo was the cat's meow. Interesting, I hadn't considered this because it wasn't as elevated in the public consciousness like this most recent gasp of the poker craze.

Gambling is a very big thing in Australia, though I don't partake myself. You can bet on almost anything at any time, and you don't have to be in a casino to do it. You can waste your paypacket down at the pub as most of them these days have a selection of slot machines, or as we call 'em, "pokies". There is a very big club scene in Australia that revolves around gambling revenue and there are Tabs (betting shops, horses, greyhounds, football, whatever) everywhere.

In grade 7 we had this thing called the money game- every thursday and tuesday for a term we pretend we are people in a town who have to pay bills work etc... I worked at the bank... but after a couple of weeks we could start our own busness(after going through all the regulations etc...).
I started up a casino
I ended up with the most amount of money at the end

Here deep in the city almost every late night diner has a game room in the back where every nationality you can imagine each has their own little illegal slots. It is almost a ritual that every immigrant group has to have one of these places so they can look like gangsters. It must be the Elliot Ness / Al Capone syndrome.
