Why are there pictures where the cross hairs are missing and there isn't anything white or bright behind them?

Well, maybe the background is completely black? On 2003-02-20 02:34, joemillionare wrote:

Sorry, but without pointers to the images in question or photo id's your question can't be answered.
Harald
Take a look here for the photo IDs you want.
We have discussed this topic repeatedly on the BABB. But, there is a "short course" available.
Go to http://www.clavius.org/photoret.html and scroll a bit over halfway down the page. There are illustrative photos and an explanation of what happens to make the crosshairs fade out in some shots.

Dagnabbit, Jim, I was getting ready to post the Clavius page when I saw you beat me to it.
Please refer to a specific photo or photos.
Good morning apolloxxxx and how are you today?
As far as I know, he never used that nick here. That's one of his nicks from ApolloHoax. BABB readers know him as SaturnV. And the Yahoo group knows him as "nasahoax" and "desertfox21". A troll by any other name ...

SO Apollo...Umm..joe..Yah whatever. Welcome to the board if you are for real.
Show us the exact picture that you are talking about. Each pic. has a exact reference number that allows pople to easily find and reference them. Whtch one was it? Or can you describe it? I bet somebody has seen it before. Good Luck.
P.S. I think a Gargoyle is more descriptive. Only comes out at night and early morning before and after high school.
Erm, how did Jagster deduce that he was SaturnV/Apollo_172003/Nasahoax/whatever? Did I miss something?
They talk the same and both use a liberal amount of capitalization of whole words. He has come back recently with the exact same questions as the other did in the same wording.
SmartHoaxer might not be, but the evidence is very strong against him.
Could AS16-113-18282 be one?
No, no. Mainframes has been reading The Hobbit. Or is that legend older than Tolkien? Now there's an off-topic tangent that could bring about a swift thread-locking! On 2003-02-20 13:26, Eirik wrote:

HBs usually use low-quality scans to make their points, e.g.On 2003-02-20 19:44, Peter B wrote:

But a real good scan http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/...-113-18282.jpg leaves no open question.
Never try to prove scams with bad scans.

F****** A, Bubba!
Tolkien knew about and borrowed from many sources, including Norse and Icelandic folk tales, sagas and myths. Apparently the notion of trolls that turn to stone in sunlight is an Icelandic legend. Tolkien may have been present when a colleague, Helen Buckhurst, read a paper at Oxford describing such creatures (Feb. 1926).On 2003-02-21 05:35, Jovianboy wrote:

And it's not off-topic. After all, it's bright solar radiation that does in the trolls -- do you suppose the entire Lunar surface could be troll carcases?
I think it's appropriate to point out that Joemillionaire's (any relation to JoetheBartender?) question was about crosshairs that do not appear over white areas. IOW, he's asking about instances that do not fit the standard explanation.
Now, as to what those instances are, I think we'd need specific examples before we could give positive answers. But here are some possibities.
1. Black crosshairs on black backgrounds. Not enough contrast to make them out.
2. Low quality scans where such details fail to show on the image. High quality prints and scans will still show them.
3. Deliberate airbrushing for publication in magazines, books, or for other aesthetic purposes. The originals will still have them though.
But where is JM now? He hasn't bothered to reply to this thread yet.
