Thread: Commercial Blunders

    Wink Commercial Blunders

Have you seen the commercial for the SUV where the couple drives out to the desert and puts up a portable basketball hoop? They watch as the setting sun does a "slam dunk" right into the net. Cute right? Only problem is, when they first start watching it, the sun is to the right of the hoop, and it moves to the left as it sets. Maybe these guys are on another planet that revolves around its star in the opposite direction from ours. But if they are on Earth, the sun usually sets from left to right (east to west). Someone at the ad agency didn't do their homework, or perhaps never got up off their butts to actually watch a sunset.

Just wondered if anyone else noticed.

No, but it would matter if you are facing north or south, and whether you are in the north or south hemisphere.

    Maybe they were in Australia.

I hear there's a lot of desert there as well, so that's probably it.

If the Sun is going in for a dunk, do you really expect it to stay in its normal orbital path? C'mon, it'd never make it through the D.

But you must realise that ad agencies are a prime cover for alien spies stationed here on earth.

Well that would go a long ways towards explaining why so many ads are bad.

It must be the same alien ad agency that produced a commercial seen in California several years ago. In that one, we see in a panoramic long-shot, a family that has parked their SUV on a California-like beach, and are playing in the sand. The sky is still light blue. It is apparently just after sunset, but we also see a full moon apparently rising - in the West! But the Sun has just set. (Unless its dawn – but also in the West!) Not only that, the moon is also much larger than normal. (A forced Moon illusion.)

Either the art director is having fun for dramatic effect. Or it was filmed on a beach, on a planet in a binary star solar system. So rising star A can illuminate the retrograde rising Moon while star B is setting.

I seem to remember Ford doing an advert with some questionable astronomy.

As well as with some very questionable vehicles.
