    How old?

This is just sheer curiousity, I suppose. Many boards are frequented by the social group that could be characterised as the "Angry Young Teens" who seem to like to spend their time screaming their angst into the uncaring abyss of the internet. But BAUT is one of those that is markedly different - so I was just wondering how the demographics here pan out. Are our teens not angry enough, or are they not here at all?

*Edited to point out that the poll isn't public, so ladies may retain their air of mystery*

18 here. And I've never even understood teen angst, much less had it.

I am 39. The only "teen angst" I ever had (or understood in others) was how to get laid.

Lianachan, you did what I did on the thread What's the age of the BABB? I overlapped an age group, too. It made for a confusing few days.

I'd tried to be careful about that, too.

I just turned 39 last month. I feel fortunate that I look younger than my age. Of course, working for an airline has aged me. Before 9/11, I could pass for 21. After 2002, I shot up 10 years.

Air of mystery? Why would I want that? It should be no worse for a woman to age than a man. I am 28. I will turn 29 in just under two months. (BAUTers in Washington state or willing to make a trip are invited to my birthday party! It'll be Discworld-themed.) While, yes, my body's deteriorating (faster than average, too), I like to think that my brain is improving enough to make up for it.

Funnily enough, I do know that. I had always been brought up to believe that it's rude to ask a lady her age, you see. I'd thought it was quite clear from the context of my post that it wasn't intended to be a sexist statement.

Discworld? I had to spend an entire day with Terry Pratchett once. He gave me a pile of autographed books, one of which was personalised to me and which I still have. The rest were distributed to my dad (a huge fan) and various friends (also fans).

"Had to"? I know people who would cheerfully kill for an opportunity like that!

Like most of my guest list, for example. (I saw him in Seattle two weeks ago; he was very nice.)

Well I got to appear in a short story anthology with him. It came out in 1990, when he was only moderately world-famous.

At the time, I was a fan. I didn't really like him, though. He was trying to be funny, and he just wasn't. At all. I guess the pressure of sitting under a banner calling him "Britain's Funniest Man!" was just too much. It was shortly after then that I noticed his books had become terribly formulaeic, and had even started ripping off the same fairy stories as he'd already ripped off in earlier books. I still love the early Discworld books, though. Just never make me see that man again!

I hear you! Before 9/11, I was happily married, felt young, with a new baby crawling all over me.

Now I'm divorced (or very nearly so), feel quite old, and miss my son.

Age is fleeting. It's death that lasts and lasts!

(gosh, how gruesome! Yes, there's hope for me yet!)

Don't forget taxes! I got a letter in the mail from the Indiana Department of Revenue last month. I fall under the Indiana Tax Amnesty for "failing" to pay my taxes in 1999. I do my taxes every year. For some reason, I can't find my records for 1998 & 1999. Therefore, I have no proof. Moving multiple times over the years tends to misplace important documents.

I downloaded the 1999 forms for the 1040EZ & the IT-40EZ. I just got a copy of my W-2 forms from UA. I now will go back in time and fill out each form. I will then call the Indiana Department of Revenue to advise them of my findings and fax or mail my new proof. I will then tell them to stop sending me scary letters that I owe them $812.98 ($1,332.68 with interest and penalties). I hope I find that they owe me money, so I can collect with interest and penalties.

Okay, I'm kidding about that last part about intimidating the State of Indiana. Oh, the stress of life does not help with aging!

I would say that being married and then getting divorced really aged and fatten me.

I'm lucky that I have a good relationship with my ex and I see my three kids just about everyday.

It does get better, but there are sometimes that I do wish for my old life back. But the net result is that I'm happier now than I was for 90% of my marriage.

I'm 42. I did have teenage angst when I was a teenager (followed by 20-something angst when I was, er...) but I grew up. I still listen to Joy Division though...

Nuts. I wished you would have asked yesterday, as I was a year younger back then.

I am now aging at a rate of less than 2% per year, and hope to eventually quit aging hardly at all.

Bob Hope, a few years ago, said he hoped to live to see 100. Someone asked him, "who would want that", he said "someone who is 99". [He made it, too.]

That's not me, but it is my wive's b-day, oddly enough.

    Happy belated B-day.

It's sad to see all the kids aging at such a rapid rate - some more than 5% per year!

I didn't use to feel too old. Dis-appointed maybe, but not old. Yesterday though we took my son to the University of Missouri, Rolla for an open house where it looks like he's planning on going next year. All the administrators were, how do you say it, empathetic? Basically they're in the same boat I am. All the lovely young college women, well, it's like they were patting an old man on the head. YES, they finally are talking to me. NO, it's not the way I wanted them too way back when I was going to school. Well at least they talked to my son. An exciting look at what's on his plate as far as classes, living and learning while he's there yesterday and the blank stares from the mirror I had this morning while I'm trying to figure out how I'm ever going to pay for it while I was getting ready to drive into work at 2 am, and no I'm not an astronomer. Oh Gawd I'm old. I'm old and pieces are falling off of me. It's over and all that's left is to pay the bills.

The only picture I could find this morning comes off from a RC Combat match a couple years ago. I was launching another contestants plane, and it's my good side.

At least I had my Taz shorts on!

I'm 41, except for my knees (which are about 85, after 20+ years of competitive basketball) and my mind (which insists that I am still only 15).

I hear you there. Basketball has always been my favorite sport to play, though baseball is where I excel as far as performance. I'll be the big 50 in a couple months, and had to give up hoops this season. I played in a very competitive 35 and over league, and can run the floor as well as the "kids" in our league, but last winter had a 2nd surgery on my left knee. It's weak, wobbly, and an accident waiting to happen. Don't want to be crippled by 55, so now I channel my energy to coaching kids.

Funny though, the transition wasn't as depressing as I though it might be. I miss playing, but it is a gas watching the kids learn and play, and it's kind of like passing on knowledge and that feels good. It's cool too that every once in a while they ask Coach Don to show off a bit for them. We have a lot of fun.

I'm not an experienced or good enough skydiver to be an instructor or formal coach, but I do what I can to make the newer less experienced jumpers feel more comfortable and part of the group. We jump & party and I think some are surprised that the "old guys" aren't as stuffy as they think. Proximity often breeds understanding.

That was windier than expected; thanks for asking.

I turned 34 last weekend (2nd of OCtober). Celebrated it by soaking myself in the Niagara River rapids then getting (apparantly) the best Sushi in Toronto (for a measly $120, without drinks)

I've been teaching since 1998 and look even younger than Candy does for my age! (I never would have guessed your age BTW) I'd post a picture, but do I have to have a web service, or can I upload it directly to the host?

    Pete
