After we have humans on the moon. Were working on putting a moonbase up, so we can get to other planets (mars even) much cheaper. Less gravity=better take off. That would be the first step in colonizing other planets.Originally Posted by Stevereno

Do you mean some type of a research base on the Moon? I could see the possibility of a research station of a half dozen individuals on the Moon by 2050....sort of an ISS but on the Moon. I'm not sure, however, if building a modular system on the lunar surface would be within our engineering capabilities. We'd have to, however, be quite confident of our spacecraft and life supporting technology to actually leave humans on the Moon.does any one know this? I would love to be around when this occurs. We can work in space, we can put people on the moon. The next leap will be living on the moon. This is the challenge we will need to overcome, it is a big problem though because we have nothing like it in existance yet. How would they grow food, and have oxygen on the moon? Someone is going to have to come up with some radical advances in our technology for this to work, so I can see why it's taking awhile.

People have to realize that WE HAVE to do this. So far the United States Government does not realize this they all are concerned about going to war with countries that don't follow our own. What really the REALLY reason we are still in Iraq. They have allready set up a new government. Bush wants to create a small version of America in Iraq. Clones as you will. Until he is satified that Iraq is another USA he wouldn't allow troops to leave.
By the time 2010 rolls around this planet is going to lose its polar icecaps and more flooding will occur. We need to provide resources so that we can inhabit other worlds or moons to live on.
We need to get that mentallty through to the people that matter. If we don't the future does not look that promising.

The exact timetable is still being determined. The current idea is that we should get them there about 2030. That is subject to change and budget cuts.

Yeah, but then again WWII drove us to create the atom bomb, very important findings took place during that time, so in a way it could be helpful but usually I'd say no, it's a waste of time for humanity in general.

well i seen a program on tv a few years ago and it was about extracting water out of rocks,
ya lots of people will say are you nuts! but the process is that you get the tempature high enough and water droplets form and also other elements are extracted from it
am not to sure how they are doing on that subject , i would have to find out
they where saying that the moon is a rich body able to give that and so would mercury...

Trouble is, the Moon is a very dry body - the Apollo lunar samples had no significant evidence of water in the rocks, so we won't be mining the average moonrock for water. But there may be places on the moon where water has not been removed and that's why we've been talking about the lunar poles as the place to set up our first base where there might be ice in permanant shadows there.
With the recent articles suggesting the first return to the Moon in about 2018, I would hope we will be planning 1 to 2 manned landings a year for a few years, exploring the geology and looking for the right place to put a moonbase and maybe by the mid 2020s we might start building such a moonbase. Hopefully trips to Mars will follow soon after, maybe in the 2030s. Of course, that's a long ways from what I thought would happen when I was 12 years old and watching Jack Schmitt and Gene Cernan putting the last Apollo bootprints into lunar soil! We were going to land an Mars by about 1986 I'd heard then..... I thought I was going to be too young to be the first person on Mars. Now I'll be lucky to still be alive.

The question was ; When will we get people onto Mars. The answer is : Not yet.
We have the abilaty to do a lander and return. Right now. We just dont have the budget. The NASA team are looking at the biger picture. We might be able to construct the craft required within Five years, but thats not the best way. Nor is it the safest idea. It would be far better to build a staging outpost on the Moon first. There is still much reserch needed until a safe Mars mission can be undertaken. I think eighteen to twenty years away.
What really needs to change is the puplic perception of astronomy. We need to frighten the ordanary people and polaticans into budgeting us with a much higher profile. Money. Its all about the money. Untill a Meteoroid or comet gets to close. Then we might see a flury of interest.

anyways there thinking of using older technology ,like they used on saturn5 which as proven to be safe, well a mix of bit of both to go to the moon for 2018 or so

I kind of agree that we need to be on the Moon first, but as a proving ground, not a staging post. The heavy industry and engineering services are here and setting all the technological infrastructure up on the Moon is not a short-term solution. There may be a few items of the Mars vehicle that the Moon can provide but really not much. I could perhaps imagine a mission design that transferred parts to the Moon for assembly but that's about it.
How fast we get there depends on launcher technology at present. If we can get some seriously heavy lift then the technical problems for getting to the Moon or Mars from there will be much less. At present rates I might expect a trip in 2040, given delays and setbacks etc. Hopefully we can be honest about the setbacks and, while learning from accidents, not go catatonic every time one happens.
