I have read about huge freak waves in the ocean. Can they possibly belong to the tail of a Poisson or other common distribution that we learn about in our statistics courses? What is the distribution of ocean wave heights?

You can do a search on Freak Waves/ Storm waves on Dogpile. I am thinking you see a lot of these off Cape Horn and the Cape Of Good Hope.
better look for "rogue waves". (even better "ESA Rogue waves")
