    Hey Guys,

Im new to this forum, wow how I have been looking for some interesting astronomy sites and hey I guess I found it.

Anyways I come from South Africa and I have been interested in astronomy and astrology since I was a kid.

Some interesting stuff happening with Phoenix hey!!! Cant wait for more results.

I would however like to know who else is interested in Astrology and if their are any topics on it on this forum.

    Regards

Most of the discusssions around here have been to debunk Astrological claims. There have been some serious discussions in the Against the Mainstream (ATM) forum. You might wish to search there.

Hi lia moonwhisper, welcome to BAUT. Dont' worry, many of us here are not experts on anything or only on some very specific things. Interest is all you need, and you need to play nice with the other kids.

If you have questions about your telescope, the Astronomical observing equipment and accessories forum is the place to ask questions.

  8. Greetings, folks!

My name's Brian. I'm 36 years old and live in Philadelphia, PA.

I'm by no means a scientist, but I am a science enthusiast. I'm rather passionate about supporting scientific literacy (something we are sadly lacking here in the US!)

I came across this site while looking for information to debunk a "2012 Planet X" email which was forwarded to me. It is rather alarming to see how much pseudo-science makes its way around the internet.

It seems like there are a lot of knowledgeable users here. I'll spend some time reading through the posts and jump in when I'm up to speed.

    Smile Greetings!

    Hi, Brian!

BAUT could always use another skeptic; see ATM (Against the Mainstream) for discussions of particular pseudoscientific claims.

You might also be interested in a thread I started.

    Student

    Hey all,

My name is Amber. I'm currently a student at the University of Victoria, in Victoria BC, Canada. I'm pursuing a double major in both astronomy and physics. And.. just to brag... (I don't do this often) I have an A average. (I did horribly in highschool, so I'm rather proud of this, lol.)

I first came across the BA website when I was doing a project in first year on the Moon. Included, naturally, was info on the moon landing haux from way back. Hehe, it was a fun project. The other one we did was on the whole Planet X "Nibiru" thing... we spent hours laughing over the various emails/articles/videos we could find. Since we got a lot of our material from here, I figured I'd atleast introduce myself :P

Hmm.. what else... well, I'm recently engaged to a wonderful man. We hope to be married next june during the summer solstice. I do a bit of observing when I can, which... sadly... isnt' very often anymore. I'm starting to know my way around the sky better than most, even though the only equipment I own is a pair of really really nice binoculars ^^ With schooling coming out of my own pocket, I really can't afford anything else.

Well, I can't think of what else to put, but if anybody would like to know more feel free to ask

Hope to talk with you all later!
    Amber

Well, all this controversy about whether we should return to the moon is moot. Amber apparently travels there to do school projects.

    Welcome to BAUT, Amber.

Welcome, Brian aka Fun. Can I call you Fun?

If you're passionate about supporting science literacy, check out the National Center for Science Education. They do good works, and can always use another supporter.

    Hello everyone

    Hi,

I'm Alexei, from Annapolis MD. I'm a submarine officer in the US Navy, currently working in the Pentagon. My degree's in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Astronomy (I used to joke in school that I was going to design the first warp drive ). I've always loved space, the starts, NASA, and the like, so naturally submarines seemed like the best way to go (actually if you think about it, except for gravity and the totally different propulsion system, submarines are about as close to a space ship as you can get - totally hostile surroundings, small quarters, necessity for self-sufficiency, high technical. Shoot, if you ask me they should make submariners into Astronauts! ) Anyway, I look forward to the discussion here.

    Cheers,
    Alexei

Hi Alexei, welcome to BAUT. We have several Navy (former/current) guys around here (but not me).

Well, all those differences, plus the fact that you can't see the stars from inside a sub, but I understand what you mean. I know there have been astronauts from the Navy, but I don't know if any were submariners.

Ok, I just re-read myself. That should be stars, not starts. And highly technical, not high technical.

... but I still plump for roboexploration. A good place to discuss this issue would be a thread in... hrm... space exploration, a subforum here at BAUT. I think. My seniors can correct me if I am wrong.

As for "warp drives", I guess you know about this paper, which belongs to the domain of "speculative physics", and has generated a substantial literature in this genre. The title is a bit misleading: the spacetime models Alcubierre proposed (and related ones proposed since) are not in any reasonable sense "solutions of the Einstein field equation", which governs general relativity. Rather, they are Lorentzian manifolds which are generally acknowledged to have pedagogical value for students of gtr (and manifold theory). The research literature on these so-called "warp drive spacetimes" mostly focuses on shooting down the possiblity that such a thing might be physically possible, I'm sorry to say!

Oh yeah, welcome to BAUT  If you look at your own posts above, you can probably see an "Edit" button next to the "Quote" button. I use that alot!

    Greetings...

Greetings all, My name is Jamie I'm from Perth Western Australia... I'm 27 and have just recently been listening to Astronomy Cast and have been loving it. I've always loved the stars, physics and the quest for knowledge. I just haven't been able to put enough money aside to get myself a telescope!! Thats probably because i'm looking for a decent Catadioptric telescope but find they're just a tad on the expensive side... well nice to meet you all!!!

hey yall, my name is aleaz cazan 28yr space opera nut. i first ran onto this site because i was complaining about the way space is depicted in television..(sound, movement, etc) glad to see other people dislike it too!! makes me feel less ubergeeky.... (if ubergeeky is watching a scifi tv show and constantly complaining that the way the spaceship MOVES is "NOT REAL.")

    Hello everyone!

I am new to Bad Astronomy, and this is my very first post. I am actually glad to become a member on here, too. Astronomy is and has always been a major hobby of mine; which is why I signed up. It just makes me sad how the science is unappreciated by many.

Anyway, like I said, I am really happy to join this forum and be with my kind of people.

    Thank you.

Hmm...i meant to do this sooner.

Hi, the names Andy and i found this site by following the link from the Bad Astronomy site. Which i had stumbled across when searching for information on the Apollo missions. I'd read some article on a forgettable website advocating the hoax claims and realised that i didn't know enough about NASA and the space program in order to make an informed judgement.

Being born in 1973 meant i did not witness the events, and it was just common knowledge that we'd been to the moon, right? Just as common knowledge says we have 5 senses and Edison is the inventor of the lightbulb, oh wait...

So, i've now spent a lot of time reading threads and learning a lot more about Apollo and other missions. A *lot* more, and in such detail too. I've read some elegant arguments against the hoax, but none are as enjoyable or concise as Aldrin's rebuttal of Sibrel. I still get kick out of watching Dave Scott dropping the hammer and feather. And as for those claims, meh, they just didn't stand up to scrutiny.
