Thread: NEW MEMBER? Introduce yourself in this thread.

    Good afternoon everyone,

I'm a long-time amateur astronomer (almost 20 years) getting back into things after being pretty inactive for a couple of years. Currently I have two scopes, a 100mm refractor and a 12.5" Dobsonian.

I suppose I should start. My name is Matthew Kokas (yes my email address ends with an "i"). I'm a 15 year old who goes to school in Melbourne, Australia. Which is incidentally where I also live. I love physics, and astrophysics especially. Though I never seemed to get in the whole observational astronomy thing. Umm... is there anything else I should say? Probably not: it'd bore you to tears.

Hi moonpower. I'm not sure I understand you question. My guess as to what you read is that the moon does not give off light on its on (it doesn't glow like the sun), but it reflects the light of the sun.

If that doesn't answer your question, it might be best to post it in the Questions and Answers forum (LINK) which is designed for astronomy questions.

    Talking well im new

Well, I'm a 13 year old and I happen to be in love with medicine. I plan on become either a pedtrian or a surgeon. I go to school in the USA. I have 5 really close friends. Um.... I love to read. Basically anything, but my favorite thing to read about, which is crazy is vampires and witches, but anyway thats me.

Question To our competitive "me youngest" subscribers!

Hi guys - I'm not claiming any special age position on this thread - I'm 74 but hope I can still communicate with all ages.... it's great to see younger, enthusiastic people exchanging ideas - much of them, I'm afraid to say, way over my head - BUT I'm always prepared to listen,,and hopefully contribute..
I'm from the Central Tablelands of NSW, and am currently trying to follow up stuff on ceramic fuel cells and a new light/electricity converter coating created in South Africa and being strongly developed by a German Solar Energy firm. I don't know if I'm on the right "channel" to discuss this - or even if the "right" channel exists within this forum - can anyone clue me in please?

    Guess it's my turn.

41 years old, married, career as medical transcriptionist.

Have loved astronomy since age 8. As a child I read the intro book Stars over and over until the covers fell off. By age 11 was subscribed to Sky & Telescope. Wanted to be a pro, but alas higher mathematics and physics...

Currently own a 4.25" reflector. Would like to invest in a larger reflector (actually my dream is owning a 12" Celestron, which of course is a Schmidt-Cassegrain), but am also looking to purchase a quality solar telescope: To view sunspots, flares, etc. (I live in a highly sunny clime). Of course the sunspot cycle is currently at minimum, but that'll change.

Meteorology is my 2nd love. Most sciences are of interest.

Husband and I are as "green" as possible. We recycle, are nixing old-fashioned light bulbs, etc.

My spirituality is Yeshuan. I am a devotee of Yeshua; His life, principles, etc.

Hi QuietMike too. Actually, unless the applications are particularly for spacecraft, I think General Science might be better.

Hi! I'm 20 and live in California,us I am currently a jr. in college studying graphic design/computer science.

I love everything computer, i also like dirt bike riding and snow boarding =). My name is new but I have been a "lurker" for some time just browsing the topics on my off time, So I decided to make an account and join in the fun! =D. I'm not a genius so don't expect anything to amazing from me =P.

I love science, space and technology very much and i can see that this forum has a lot of very intelligent people that actually know what they are talking about, thx for having me =).

Welcome! I see you are in graphic design. I am looking for a good site or tutorial program for Vue5 Infinite. Do you know of any? The vendor wants $250 for their tutorial package!

  19. #799
Well other then the one torrent i have found that has a flash lesson, i haven't seen any free tutorials. You can find a lot of amateur sites which have some basic guides. Just google it.

    Googling, what is that?
Kidding. I have tried web-searches but most are just small to medium tips on how to do stuff. I was hoping someone would have a 'From Interface to Animation' type program or site. I might just spend the $50 on the first of seven CDs. I can't even find them used on Ebay, probably because I will be the first to spend money on one.

  21. #801
Yes i eventually broke down and bought the first tutorials because the only torrents i could find had 1 seeder if that . I'm not really sure why i cant find any torrents for this i have never had any trouble with any other program.....but i digress.

I'm still in the early stages of my graphic design classes so we haven't gotten to the more technical programs, i mostly have to find and learn these programs myself, not to mention my current teacher could probably learn a few things from me.........ah the wonders of California college....

Thought I'd introduce myself as the "nag message" suggests at the top of the forums.

Not much to tell here. Jobwise, I'm a nobody graphics dork and hobbyist CGI nerd. I've used/built/fixed/exploded computers pretty much all my life. I had a Coleco ADAM, a C64, Trash-80 and varies other computers.

I'm a beginner (serious newbie) to astronomy all together but have been interested in space since I was a child.
My main reading here has been in the Conspiracy theory section of the boards. Since I had a relationship unpleasantly destroyed by nutcase apocalypse people. I've sort of gone out of my way to debunk these crazy theories and psuedo-science.

Ok, there you have it (Hope it wasn't a overshare). Me. Such as I am.

    Hello.

    So... I'm new.

Not only that but I'm English and might have an irritating habit of using punctuation; forgive this!

I'm an electrical engineer, living in Liverpool, and occasionally working in Nuremburg, Germany.

I'm interested in all of the sciences, qualified to greater or lesser degrees in biology, chemistry and physics.
Don't ask any questions of those areas, I got my quals more than seven years ago and haven't studied.

Astronomy is another area of the sciences that I have developed an interest in..

I want to feel at home here, but don't want to be coddled.

    Friends...

    Greetings!

  24. #804
well Im Tyler, I live in Omaha, nebraska and Im 16.

I got a 4.5 in meade reflector and I know how to use it but dont know what to look at, Ive seen saturns rings, orion nebula and venus, pleiades, I dont know what to look at with it.

Ok, I suppose it's about time for me to introduce myself, seeing as I just posted a rant on this forum! ;P

I am a 37-year-old Ph.D toxicologist with a jones for astrophysics, climate science, and sci-fi. I got my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in physics before switching fields at the ripe old age of 24. I am now contemplating switching fields AGAIN back into a more physics-related area (I'm considering physical oceanography). Why switch fields at this late date?

Why not?? I love to learn, and it will be a kick re-learning all of the old physics and math that I let slide for the past 14 years (that last part was meant as sarcasm ). I just started the review process 3 weeks ago with DiffEq and Halliday and Resnick. I am still working my full-time job on top of this, so the review and my job pretty much take over my life right now.

When I had free time, I participated in a couple of environmentalist groups and rode a motorcycle in addition to my astrophysics/sci-fi addiction.

I'm a 24 year old master control operator for a local Fox affiliate. To those of you that know what an MCO does, you know how boring it can be. Which is why I find wonderful forums like these to pass the time more quickly. In some ways, I am getting paid while sitting here posting this. Yeah, I don't have a lot that I have to do, so fortunately I am able to explore my interests and become inspired by the complexity that is this universe, which is my natural passion.

I also make trance using several different music production programs, but I don't limit myself to trance. I've been known to create some really beautiful and ambient music specifically designed to capture the art that is within the cosmos.

I am a trekkie, a warcraft freak, and I have discovered I can whistle four different ways.
