Wonderful nickname, mithril! I guess we know at least one of the books you like.

Hello, I am a 50 something, slightly overweight, balding white guy who got laid off in '09 after 20 years at IBM and Lenovo, where my last position was that of business development manager for high performance computing solutions in the americas. After I got laid off I went back to my alma mater (NCSU) where many years earlier I received a master of science in technical communication and began working on a freelance biography of one of that university's distinguished professors, a man by the name of Willard Harrison Bennett who discovered the z-pinch in 1934. Research on Bennett led to readings of Hannes Alfven and Anthony Peratt. I am interested in plasma physics but am late to the party and am trying to catch up.

Welcome, mithril! Gotta love your name, as a member of a few Tolkien societies.

Welcome, quotation! Interesting a biography of Bennett, no wonder you were looking in my thread about a Z-pinch. I will come with more, but not today, too much work and a school is visiting the institute. BTW I met Alfvén, when I worked at his lab in Stockholm, he was a very nice guy to newbies there.

Thanks tusenfem! I always pictured Alfven as a kind man. Bennett, maybe not so much. First rate mind no doubt, but doesn't seem to have suffered the same professional trials that temper one with a bit of humility. He's a little spooky actually (too much time at naval research facility?) That said, I really do believe the Z-pinch is probably one of the least well known yet most important phenomenon ever discovered (not that Bennett himself ever really seems to have thought so). At any rate I look forward to reading more, but having been responsible for over 600 sales reps and business partners who all wanted the latest and greatest on our linux cluster, visualization workstation solutions I do understand time dilation.

A delightful charm to make your acquaintance, Kyrre. Subject to the Fictitious RoundaBAUT Policies Amendment of 2005 I hereby welcome thee. And by thee I mean you.

    Thank you!
I have not committed any Wikipedia articles yet, but will own up to being a Pratchett-fan (not really a minority view around here I suspect).
As for technical writing, I find it easier than technical talking as the accent from my native language is stubborn to the point where I am actually used as a translator between American and Russian colleagues -without necessarily speaking Russian.

    Hello All,
I am a thirty something BAUT newbie... I live in the Midwest in the USA, married with three kids. I happened to come across this site when I googled "Is Elenin causing earthquakes?". Boy I am glad I found this site from that web search! The people on this site cut through language with such ease! Sometimes I can be the worst kind of skeptic... I am not always armed with the best of knowledge on the subject and not sure which side of the tug-o-war to fall on. lol

    Hello

    Hello,

I'm a new user here, just found you through Google. I'm desperatly looking for some help, actually I would need to ask people who have their mind into this some questions because I'm writing a book and it's a fiction. There's a lot of space story and celestial body imperatives in it and I'm not sure i'm getting the positions right. I will open a new thread if you don't mind with some questions I would very much need an answer to.

    Thank you very much

Welcome to BAUT, pravee. BAUT isn't the place to advertise numerology, nor is this the section to discuss it in, so your link has been redacted. If you actually wish to discuss astrology or numerology, you could start a thread in the appropriate section. Note that these are considered non-mainstream science (in fact, junk). Make sure you read the rules and advice threads.
Get up, a get-get, get down.

Hello all, pleasure to meet you. With a tip of my hat and a deep bow, I introduce myself as Zoutenbranden!

In honesty, astronomy and astrophysics are a secondary hobby to me, behind linguistics and writing. I'm an avid writer of science-fiction, so I've joined this forum to engage in intelligent conversation, provoking debates, and all other sorts of things that are hard to find on there here interwebs.

    My name is sky .
I'm a relative newbie to this board so here go's.

Some very interesting introductions there. Always nice to know what people do outside of astronomy.

I've been interested in astronomy since I was a little girl ! I remember sneaking outside on clear nights just to gaze up at the stars, until my parents caught me to go to bed . Night sky is mysterious, so I can not give up exploration. I want to get more secrets here.

A few months ago saw the lunar eclipse, the moon turned red. Has anyone seen the lunar eclipse? Why does the moon appear red? Is that mean a change in the event of bad?

    Awesome!

    Hello everyone!

I can't express how happy I am to have found this forum. I am an avid astronomy and physics fan with little to no education in these subjects. I am a "bad" astronomer I guess... a true layman enthusiast. Among my circle of friends and associates however I am considered the go to guy when it comes to questions about science, math... or (I guess I'm tooting my own horn here) just about anything else. Sometimes its a struggle to stay humble Perhaps some of the folks on this forum can help keep me grounded.

I am an aspiring Sci-fi writer with a lot of questions. As uneducated as I am, I find myself capable of visualizing intuitively concepts and phenomenon way beyond my grasp to understand mathematically. This stuff is my joy in life... the mysteries of reality, from macro astronomy to the micro quantum universe... it absolutely fascinates me.

Anyway... if your reading this I hope to shamelessly exploit your genius, lol... I am sure, if my first few questions see good response, I will be a long time member of this forum. Who knows, maybe one day your name could appear in a list of acknowledgments in my first hit novel?

    Respectfully,

    ZunarJ5
