Hi, Stuart here. I've been lurking on off for the past few years. Registered quite a while back but never really got around to posting.
Astronomy is one of my many interests, but admittedly it's something I don't know too much about. I'm most probably just going to continue lurking and learning, but if I feel I can contribute to a topic then I'll post away.

    Gidday to all

I'm Rod from Melbourne Australia. My astronomical interest is in observing deep sky objects as well as planets. Astronomy has been a interest of mine for several years (well more than several actually), but only became a hobby about 5 years ago with the purchase of my first telescope. It wasn't long before apeture fever grabbed me and the 12" Dob was purchased. It was really the best buy. I can't get enough use out of it. I have now started purchasing some really good eyepieces to go with it.

Look forward to interesting discussions on the board.

    Thanks

    Rod

    Smile Introducing Myself

    Hi!

My name is Okuro Oikawa and I come from Austria, Europe. I became interested in astronomy a few years ago. Since then I just read astronomy- and spaceflight-related literature.

What fascinates me most on astronomy is the exploration of unknown objects and processes in huge dimentions. I'm as well interested in the exploration of the solar system as well as in astrophysics.

At the beginning, I started with the past (mostly manned) spaceflights. Now I mostly think about space and time in the universe.

    Hello, friends.

My name is Owen and I recently took a serious interest in Astronomy. What used to be time spent generally browsing the web has now been dominated by quenching my thirst for knowledge. I won't participate in any threads until I learn a bit more, though (don't want to come across as a complete tool, you know?)! But rest assured that I'll be quietly observing the activity around these parts.

I'm hoping to purchase my first telescope soon, so it would be great to get some help!

    All the best
    Owen

Oh darn, I can't lie. I was just afraid you'd use up some of my good times!

    Cool

Hello all, my name is kevin and I live in England just outside south London. I am interested in all aspects of nature from evolution to cosmology. I am pretty inquisitive and have always asked the basic fundamental question like, where did we come from, where did the universe come from, why are things the way they are ect ect.

I understand the basic concepts but am hopeless at maths so i am pretty much a laymen when it comes to the really deep rooted answers.

I have used the internet for a few years now and have always read bits and bobs about stuff so i am full of random information ! I like the look of this forum and have been reading bits for a few days so i have decided to join and start asking questions about things i don't fully understand or am just curious about.

Now what do i ask in my first thread :/ ?

    Cheers, Kev

    Hi Kevin!

Welcome to the forum. I hope you have a pleasant experience here.

When you come up with an idea for a question it's probably worth punching it into the search engine - it's pretty impressive how much ground has already been covered here - lots of great questions and great responses too.

    Have a nice day!

    Hello All,
My names Phill and I live in the UK, Europe. I came back to astronomy a couple of years ago, after many, many years away. I have got myself a small Skywatcher Newtonian reflector 130x900mm, it has to be portable as I live in in an area of high LP, so travel out of town to find somewhere to observe. Also have a pair of 10x25 white light binoculars for the Sun.
Well I'm off to explore the rest or this great site.

May you all have clear night skies.

    New in Hawaii

    Hi Everyone,
I'm Robert, a chemist currently residing in Hawaii. I did once post a question years ago... something that came up at a bar with some friends along the lines of "if the sun were to explode would we see it or would the gravitational field be disrupted before the light hits us?" and then fell off the forum.
Anyway, I've always been interested in astronomy, more recently intrigued by astrobiology and this forum is a pretty awesome place to follow great discussions so I'm back! I've already spent two nights this weeks until 2am following some pretty cool threads and hopefully will be able to contribute to a discussion.

Welcome to the board. Can you remember what your user ID was when you first joined, as I looked for the post you mentioned and could not find it. If we can find it it may be possible to reactivate that ID and merge the two.

BTW you can try asking that question again in a new thread, but from what I remember, gravity travels at the speed of light. however for gravity to be disrupted there would have to be a change in mass of the sun. If, and it can never do this as the Sun is too small, it could shrink to be a neutron star or a black hole, we would still continue to orbit it at the distance we do today.

We now return you to the purpose of this forum, namely meeting and greeting

  20. #3320
This was back around 2000, so no I don't recall my username. But I'll try to recall the details of the question and re-post it.
    Cheers!

    Hello...

    Hello All,

I've been reading/lurking for about a month now.
I find that the entertainment value of the ATM, HB, and CT threads really brighten up a rainy day.

    Hi,

I'm a new member, but have lurked in the shadows for quite a long time. I'm now wondering how many posts I have to make before they actually start showing up when I make them, not hours later

    Welcome Cave Dweller!

We've seen you pop up in our cave a few times before. Try the raptor meat - it's delicious!

I think you're right about at that limit, though I expect that's something our two Admin chums or Phil & Fraser can adjust as they please. You should be about good to go by now though.

    Hope you have fun here!

I'm a space person on the West Coast of America. Been following space for longer than I can remember (Seriously, everything before last week is a blank! Long story.) I'm mostly interested in policy, commercial space, and commercial space policy.

    Hi.

My name is Somes. I am a graduating university student (majoring in literature) and an aspiring science fiction writer. Science is an interest of mine, though I probably don't know as much about it as a lot of people here. I was recommended this site in a discussion on another board where I asked for help with some of the scientific aspects of my fiction. I thought I would introduce myself here before doing anything else when I saw the sticky.

    Cheers, everyone.

You should be there now. Even before, the only posts held for moderator review should be ones with URLs or other suspicious content (such as words like "Viagra" or "Nike").
