See topic help the ignorant English major--a DOUBLE crescent moon?

If that's not satisfying, ask a question in the Question and Answer section where it will get more visibility.

Hello, I have been lurking here for some months now, and have finally dared to post. I'm a retired teacher of English and Lit, no science background other than years of reading everything I can find (even if I don't really understand quite a bit of what I read) and an enduring interest in astronomy and science fiction.

Oh yes, - I'm yet another Aussie and in my spare time I run a wildlife shelter. Which keeps me poor but honest.

I have so many questions I've been saving up for years.

    Welcome to BAUT Lyril!

Hope you're not suffering too much in the heat if you're over in the south east area. It's easing up anyway, isn't it?

Lovely to have you here. Enjoy yourself, and enjoy the site!

ETA: Actually, looks like you first posted here 6 months or so earlier than I, so I suppose you owe me a welcome.

Hello from a new sci fi enthusiast

    Hi Folks!

Just registered into this forum and would like to say hello. Although I am not new to watching and reading Sci Fi, only recently I have felt inspired to study the science behind it.

I write short stories as a hobby and recently I have decided to write a sci fi novel and it seems there is a lot of study behind it, if you want to keep it believeable.

Anyway, hope you guys have patience with a rookie!

    Hello from Toronto

I'm new to this forum, but definitely not new to astronomy. My interest goes back over 40 years, although it has grown in the last several years.
Partly due to necessity, partly inclination, telescope making is my main focus in the hobby. I live in downtown Toronto (about magnitude 2 skys) and don't own a car, so most of my observing is in the summer when I rent a car and go to star parties.
I have completed 2 telescopes, optics and all; an 8" and a 12.5" dob. I have recently built a mirror-o-matic to work on my next project, an 18" mirror for my next satisfaction (at least temporarily!) of aperture fever. Beyond that I will start making smaller, more interesting scopes.
Perhaps because my observing is limited to a few weeks a year, I have no special observing interests. From planets to galaxies, it all thrills me.

Hi Lance! Cool hobby! welcome! I have been thinking about buying a telescope. Which would you recommend? I want to see all the current technology allows us to see. BTW, what would be the answer to that? How much details can we get from the moon with a telescope? Is there some sort of infrared/night vision telescope that digitally records everything you are seeing in high definition and/or can take High Definition pictures?

I think the place to start would be the Astronomical Observing, Equipment and Accessories sub-forum.
That's where people talk about telescopes.

    Hi :)

Hi everyone, my name is Colette and I'm from Canada. I started listening to Astronomy Cast awhile ago and it prompted me to buy a 6" Dobsonian telescope I love astronomy and stargazing. My grandfather originally got me interested in it, and it's a great hobby that brings us together.

I'm glad to be a new part of this community and look forward to talking with you guys!

Hello all, my name is Jon and I live in Brandon, Florida. I am a retired IT geek, with a lifelong interest in Astronomy, cosmology, astrophysics etc. I've owned some scopes over the years, including a 10" f/5 Cave Newtonian (sold long ago, what an idiot :-(. Celestron Nexstar 11" and Meade LX90 8". I sold both of them as I have severe rhumatoid arthritis, and they were too hard to manage. My local neighborhood is like the center of the the galaxy. Can hard see mag. 3 stars. I suppose at some point I'll get another scope. What's in vogue these days?

    Jon

Hello Jesse, welcome to BAUT. Make sure you read the rules and the sticky threads in the forum you intend to post in. These rules (for alternate cosmologies etc.) are a little different than most forum rules, so you'd best be aware of them before you start. Especially things like the 30 days limit.
