An e-mail aurora alert that I recently received from http://spaceweather.com/ states the following:

Big sunspot 798 exploded twice yesterday, August 22nd, and hurled a pair of coronal mass ejections apparently toward Earth. Geomagnetic storms are possible when the clouds arrive. Sky watchers should be alert for auroras during the nights of August 23rd and 24th. High latitudes are favored: e.g., Canada, Alaska and northern-tier US states from Washington to Maine.

    Keep your fingers crossed!

Hi Dave. Thanks for the warning. I did not see anything in the skies around those dates but a I saw just a little bit Sunday night around midnight here in MN.

    Jim,

I saw a very brief auroral display on Wednesday night shortly before 10:00 p.m. EDT (2:00 UT). This was probably the tail end of activity that began after dawn (my time) that morning.

Yeah, It should be picking up again very soon as we near fall time. It's almost as if it runs on sort of a schedule. The best time for Aurora around here is mid winter.
