Maglite makes me shudder

See for yourself what Maglite's slogan is! I just saw a television ad for them today too. It makes me forlorn, confused, and upset all at once. I want to yell, "I KNOW IT'S NEVER DARK, WHY IS THAT A SELLING POINT?!?!?!?"

Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign.

The INTERNATIONAL DARKSKY ASSOCIATION is in ascendancy. It is emphasizing the positive benefits (economical, etc.) for focusing all light toward the ground. Eventually, astronomers and everybody else will have the pleasure of experiencing an economical non-light-polluted environment.

To think that I own quite a number of MAGLITE and MINI MAGLITE flashlights (helpful when the electricity goes off from time to time in the middle of the night).

Heh, my minimaglite has a red sucker wrapper over it! I use it when viewing my chart.

accidently dropped a minimaglite into an extrusion die oven last year, they fail at 600+ F. Looks cool though.
You guys think you've got it bad I live at the base of a "mountain" with a recently expanded ski area. I'm quite sure the ski area is visible from orbit at night. Gave up on the 10" dob project.

Come to think of it, in addition to large and small Maglite flashlights for groping my way around in the dark at home (helpful when the electricity fails), I have both a red *Star Lite* and a red and/or white *Skylite*, both of which are pointed only toward the ground at dark sites. I use the white part of the *Skylite* far away from astronomers (self preservation). I could get killed that way if I were careless... Amateur astronomers are an unforgiving lot.

The skies are unforgiving to me! I just got my first telescope friday. It has been completely overcast these two days! I live in Las Vegas too, and we nevvver get complete overcast. Arrggg!

It's a Celestron c150 HD, the apeture is 150 mm (hehe see the name?) also known as 6 inches. The HD designation means that it's a short tube with a correcting lens between the secondary mirror and eyepiece so it has the focal length of 1000 mm, just like a long tube, except it's short. [img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif[/img] I've been meaning to ask this, what the hell is et. al. ?! It came with only one eyepiece, a 20mm plossl, but I backordered the special eyepiece offer( http://www.celestron.com/offers/acc_kit.htm ). You get about $400 worth of eyepieces and filters for only $100 when you buy a telescope. The kit includes 32mm, 15mm, 9mm, 6mm and 4mm eyepieces, a 2x Barlow Lens, 6 different planetary filters, a moon filter, and a case to carry it all! Hope this informs you. Smaug, how much did it cost? I am looking into buying one in the future (a year or so down the road.)

Just for the 'scope it was $450, and with the eyepiece offer included it was $550. If you plan to get the eyepiece offer you have to hurry, because it ends December 31, 2002.

Thanks, but i'm not planing to buy one for another year or so. Also i am searching around for ones around that price range and users opinions are the best. It seems like that one is good and it is the top of my list.

Scopes last and last. Save money and get a used one. Find a lens pen at a camera shop and clean up the jewelry carefully and it'll be as good as new.

Mounts become obsolete as newer better drives come out, so keep the old scope and replace the mount whenever you can afford a good one.

Alternatively, if you like working with your hands then join a local astronomy club that has scope builders in it. You can learn how to turn an inexpensive chunk of glass into a superb primary.
